Having dwelt in that, the deeds done and accumulated will not be in vain. Shariputra, who else will experience individually the deeds done and accumulated by you yourself? Monks, the deeds done and accumulated will not mature in the external realm of earth, nor will they mature in the realm of water, nor will they mature in the realm of fire, nor will they mature in the realm of wind. Thus, the deeds of virtue and non-virtue done and accumulated will mature in the aggregates, realms, and sources that are grasped. Even through hundreds of kalpas, deeds will not be lost; when the conditions and time are right, they will ripen into fruits for embodied beings. Monks, in the past, there lived a Brahmin on a mountainside who took a wife from his own caste and played with her, rejoiced, and indulged in pleasure. As they played, rejoiced, and indulged in pleasure, a son was born to them, and they named him Zhima. Again, as they played, rejoiced, and indulged in pleasure, a daughter was born to them, and they named her Zhima-mo. After some time, the father of the two, the Brahmin, along with his wife, passed away. The Brahmin boy Zhima, because he loved solitude, took his sister and went to live in a forest hermitage. When the daughter Zhima-mo grew up, she was afflicted by afflictions and said, "Brother, I cannot live on the herbs of the forest, let us go to the edge of the village." So he took his sister and went to the edge of the village, and they both went begging at the same house. A wicked Brahmin heard the voices of a woman and a man and came out and said, "Do ascetics also wander about with their wives?" He said, "This is not my wife, this is my sister." "Has she been given to anyone?" He said, "No." "If she has not been given, give her to me as my wife." He said, "She has abandoned the sinful, non-holy Dharma." The peaceful Zhima-mo said, "Brother, I cannot live on the herbs of the forest, let us go to the edge of the village."

Pa. What do you think? I am troubled by afflictions in this way. If that is so, you know. That Brahmin took her as a bride with great wealth. A woman named Shima said, 'Brother, come and sit together.' He said, 'I do not seek desires, I will go to the monastery.' Brother, if that is so, if you obtain a little merit, please tell me.' Shiva went alone, without a Khenpo or a teacher, generated the thirty-seven wings of enlightenment, and realized self-enlightenment. He thought, 'I promised that sister, I should go and show her.' Those great beings teach the Dharma with their bodies, not with words, because he loved her, so he appeared in the sky like the king of swans spreading his wings, and began to perform miracles of burning, shining, raining, and lightning. Because ordinary people are quick to put their minds on miracles, Shima, like cutting off the roots of trees, prostrated at the feet of the self-Buddha and said, 'Holy one, have you attained such qualities?' 'I have attained them.' 'Holy one, you are a beggar, and I am a seeker of merit, please stay here, and I will provide you with the necessities for begging.' Sister, go ask the householder.' She went to the householder and said, 'Son of the prince, please allow my renunciate, ascetic, accomplished, great being brother, and I will provide him with the necessities for begging.' He said, 'Even if he is not a renunciate, one should give alms unwillingly, let alone a renunciate, ascetic, accomplished, great being? Go and provide the necessities for begging as you please.' She provided that self-Buddha with the necessities for begging for three months, and offered him a needle, a knife, and thread suitable for a large piece of cloth. He accepted the large piece of cloth, the knife, the needle, and the thread.

Having taken that thread, in front of that Pratyekabuddha, she began to weave, sharpening that knife until it was very sharp, and then Śyāmā bowed to his two feet and made this aspiration: 'Just as this knife is sharpened so sharply, may I also, with this root of virtue, become sharp in wisdom.' That Pratyekabuddha began to sew with a needle, piercing the needle very deeply, and then Śyāmā bowed to his two feet and made this aspiration: 'Just as this needle pierces so deeply, may I also, with this root of virtue, become deep in wisdom.' That Pratyekabuddha began to sew with thread, and the thread went through smoothly, and then Śyāmā bowed to his two feet and made this aspiration: 'Just as this thread goes through smoothly, may I also, with this root of virtue, become one with decisive wisdom.' Monks, that Brahmin girl Śyāmā at that time and in that era was none other than this monk Śāriputra. Due to the ripening of the karma of offering to the Pratyekabuddha and making aspirations, he is now sharp in wisdom, deep in wisdom, and has decisive wisdom. Monks, therefore, the ripening of purely black deeds is purely black, and the ripening of purely white deeds is also purely white. The ripening of mixed deeds is also mixed. Monks, therefore, having abandoned purely black deeds and mixed deeds, one should strive for purely white deeds. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way. Furthermore, the monks, having arisen in doubt, asked the Blessed One, the Buddha, who cuts off all doubts: 'Venerable sir, what karma did the venerable and long-lived Śāriputra perform, that due to the ripening of that karma, he was neither born into a very wealthy family nor born into a very poor family, but was born into a middle-class family, and many went forth?' The Blessed One replied: 'Monks, Śāriputra himself obtained a collection of karma, completely transformed the conditions, and abiding like a light, it will undoubtedly come to pass without difficulty.'
