Having been completely done and accumulated (good deeds), who else will experience the deeds done and accumulated by Shariputra himself? Monks, the deeds done and accumulated will not mature in the external realm of earth, nor will they mature in the realm of water, nor will they mature in the realm of fire, nor will they mature in the realm of wind. In this way, the deeds of good and evil done and accumulated will mature in the aggregates, realms, and sources that have been taken up. Even if deeds pass through hundreds of thousands of kalpas, they will not be destroyed; when the causes and conditions come together, they will ripen into fruition for sentient beings. Monks, in the past, in a certain rocky mountain area, there was a king who took a wife from his own clan, and together with her, he played, rejoiced, and enjoyed pleasure. As he played, rejoiced, and enjoyed pleasure, a son was born, raised, and grew up to be strong. Seeing his father ruling the kingdom with both Dharma and non-Dharma, he thought: I too will become king after my father passes away, and if I also rule the kingdom with both Dharma and non-Dharma, sentient beings will go to hell. So, he went to the king and said: Father, please grant me permission, I want to be ordained in the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya. The king said: Son, for what purpose do you make offerings and give alms, burn sacrifices, and afflict yourself with asceticism? This kingdom will come into your palm, and you were born into the lineage of elephant riders, why do you want to be ordained? Thus rebuking him, his father did not allow him to be ordained. At another time, he came out riding on the back of an elephant and saw a poor man holding broken tiles and a broken bowl, begging for alms. Seeing this, the prince went to him and said: Hey, sir, I was born into such a family and have not obtained the opportunity to be ordained, why don't you become ordained? The man said: Prince, I have no alms bowl and no Dharma robes, how can I be ordained? The prince said: Good sir, come here, I will give you an alms bowl and Dharma robes.

The prince took him away and went to a dwelling where there was a hermit with five kinds of clairvoyance. After arriving there, he dismounted from the elephant's back and said with humility: "This wise son of a noble family wishes to be ordained by you. Please ordain him, and I will give him a begging bowl and robes." The hermit ordained him. The prince washed and sewed his begging bowl and robes, turned them inside out, and gave them to him, saying: "Venerable one, if you gain any accumulation of merit, please tell me." He promised the prince that he would do so. He went to a solitary place, and without a preceptor or teacher, he cultivated the thirty-seven wings of enlightenment and realized self-enlightenment. He thought: "Whatever small amount of merit I have gained, I have gained it all through that prince. Since I promised him, I should go and show it to him." Those great beings teach the Dharma with their bodies, not with words. Because of his compassion for him, he rose up into the sky like a swan king spreading its wings, and began to perform miracles of burning, shining, raining, and emitting lightning. Since ordinary people quickly place their faith in miracles, the prince, like a tree cut from its roots, knelt at the feet of the self-Buddha and said: "Venerable one, have you attained such an accumulation of merit?" He replied: "I have attained it." He thought: "Whatever small amount of merit this venerable one has gained, he has gained it all through me. The reason why this venerable one did not receive ordination before is because he was born into that kind of family; the reason why I did not receive ordination is because I was born into this kind of family." Then, he prostrated to the feet of the self-Buddha and made this aspiration: "By this root of virtue, may I not be born into an extremely wealthy family, nor be born into a poor family, may I be born into a middle-class family, and may I always have many ordinations."

Thus it was established. Monks, who was that prince at that time and at that time? It was this monk Shariputra. He made offerings to the Pratyekabuddha and made aspirations, and as a result of that karma, he was not born into a very wealthy family, nor was he born into a very poor family, but was born into a middle-class family, and became greatly ordained. Monks, thus, the result of purely black karma is purely black, and the result of purely white karma is also purely white. The result of mixed karma is also mixed. Monks, therefore, one should abandon purely black karma and mixed karma, and strive for purely white karma. Monks, you should learn in this way. Furthermore, when the monks had doubts, they asked the Buddha Bhagavan, who cuts off all doubts: "Venerable sir, what karma did the venerable Shariputra do, that the Bhagavan showed him to be the foremost among those with great wisdom and those with great eloquence?" The Bhagavan said: "That is the power of aspiration. Where did he make the aspiration?" Monks, in the past, in this very fortunate kalpa, when the life expectancy of beings was 20,000 years, the teacher, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Samyaksambuddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Sugata, the knower of the world, the unsurpassed one, the tamer of beings, the teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha, the Bhagavan named Light Treasury appeared in the world, and resided near the hermitage of the deer park in Varanasi. In that teaching, this one became ordained, and the monk who caused him to be ordained, that monk was shown by the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Samyaksambuddha Light Treasury Buddha to be the foremost among those with great wisdom and those with great eloquence. At that time, this one practiced celibacy for as long as he lived, but did not obtain any accumulation of merit, and then at the time of death, he made this aspiration: "By the Bhagavan Tathagata"
