He reported. The great virtuous one with such a way of speaking. When this Dharma category was explained, the Dharma eye, free from dust and defilement, arose in all the wandering ascetics born from the womb. Then, the wandering ascetic born from the womb saw the Dharma, heard the Dharma, knew the Dharma, reached the depths of the Dharma, transcended hesitation, transcended doubt, did not rely on others, was not led by others, and having obtained fearlessness in all the teachings of the Teacher, he rose from his seat, draped his upper garment over one shoulder, and the wandering ascetic Near-Protector went to where he was, and bowed with folded palms. At that time, he spoke the verses: This is the Dharma of the protectors. In countless kalpas, billions of trillions, previously unseen and unheard, one realizes this state of immortality, free from sorrow. Where is the Blessed One, the venerable one, now residing? The venerable one is in this very place, in the Bamboo Grove, the Kalandaka Bird Sanctuary in Rajagriha (present-day Rajgir in Bihar). Venerable one, come here, let us practice pure conduct before the Blessed One. Venerable one, therefore, one should observe the retinue, for the sake of knowing those who are as unknown as we are, it is good for us to observe the retinue. Then the wandering ascetics Near-Protector and Born-from-the-Womb said to the Brahmin youths: Brahmin youths, know this! If we two practice pure conduct before the Blessed One, how will you act? Two preceptors, whatever little we need, we rely on the two preceptors. If the two preceptors practice pure conduct before the Blessed One, we will also go forth after the two preceptors have gone forth. Brahmin youths, now know that the time has come. Then the wandering ascetics Near-Protector and Born-from-the-Womb, with a retinue of two hundred and fifty, went to the Bamboo Grove, the Kalandaka Bird Sanctuary. At that time, the Venerable Assaji, for the sake of daytime wandering, was dwelling, relying on a tree. The wandering ascetics Near-Protector and Born-from-the-Womb saw the Venerable Assaji from afar.

Having seen this, Nearsurpassing said to Fromlap-born: "Fromlap-born, should we pay homage to the Blessed One, or to the one from whom we have heard the Dharma?" He said: "We should pay homage to the one from whom we have heard the Dharma." The two of them went to where the venerable Assaka was, bowed their heads at the feet of the venerable Assaka, and sat down to one side. At that time, a Brahmin who liked the moon was paying homage to and worshipping the moon. Then the Blessed One spoke a verse about this occurrence: "Whether old or young, from whom one truly understands the Dharma, one should respectfully bow to them, just like the waxing moon." A Brahmin who liked fire was also paying homage to and worshipping fire. Then the Blessed One spoke a verse about this occurrence: "Whether old or young, from whom one truly understands the Dharma, one should respectfully bow to them, just like a Brahmin treats pure fire." Vinaya Basis, Volume Four. Then the wanderers Nearsurpassing and Fromlap-born bowed their heads at the feet of the venerable Assaka, and from there they went to where the Blessed One was. At that time, the Blessed One was teaching the Dharma while surrounded by hundreds of thousands of monks. The Blessed One saw the wanderers Nearsurpassing and Fromlap-born from afar. Having seen them, the Blessed One said to the monks: "Monks, do you see these two gathering retinues, leading the sangha, coming from the front of the sangha, namely Nearsurpassing and Fromlap-born?" "Venerable one, we see them." "These two will become a pair of excellent disciples of mine, the best of pairs, a noble pair. One of them will become the best of those with magical powers, and the other will become the best of those with wisdom." Then a monk spoke a verse at that time: "The Teacher's realm of thought is boundless, the Great Man has reached the end of wisdom. The Blessed One has made an end to existence, friends Nearsurpassing and Fromlap-born, having gone to the grove of light, having seen them coming in that way, in the midst of the excellent assembly, these two will become the best pair of my disciples."
