The poisonous ones of the aquatic realm might transgress the seasons, but the Buddha's love for those to be tamed will not transgress the seasons. Just as a mother cherishes her only beloved child, contemplating and protecting its life, so too does the Thus-Gone One contemplate and protect the lives of beings to be tamed. With the compassion inherent in the omniscient lineage, he does not tire of seeking out untamed calves. His love for those who have declined in existence and evil destinies is like a cow's love for a calf that has greatly declined. Thus, the Bhagavan, with the eye of a Buddha, looked upon the world and saw that the wanderer Nigantha and the one born on the lap, both had their roots fully ripened, had performed deeds especially for the Buddhas of the past, had accumulated a collection of roots of virtue. He saw that the time for taming them was like a fruit fully ripened, waiting to be pierced by a needle. The Bhagavan thought to himself, 'Shall I tame these two for a while by teaching? Or shall I tame them by means of disciples?' Upon thinking, he saw that they were to be tamed by disciples. 'From which door shall I enter? Shall I tame them by means of miracles? Or shall I tame them by means of conduct?' Upon thinking, he saw that they were to be tamed by means of conduct. The Bhagavan sent the venerable Ashvajit to those who were to be tamed by conduct, for their conduct was such as to captivate the minds of gods and humans. Then the Bhagavan said to the venerable Ashvajit, 'Ashvajit, you should observe the wanderer Nigantha and the two born on the lap.' The venerable Ashvajit remained silent, accepting the Bhagavan's command. Then the venerable Ashvajit, being one who would do exceedingly as the Bhagavan commanded, praised and rejoiced in the Bhagavan's command, bowed his head to the two feet of the Bhagavan, and departed from the presence of the Bhagavan. Then the venerable Ashvajit, after that very night had passed, in the morning put on his lower garment, took his alms bowl and Dharma robes, and in going, returning, slightly looking, fully looking, contracting, and br

Adorned with a single robe, a patched robe, a Dharma robe, and a begging bowl, he entered Rajagriha for alms. At that time, the wandering ascetic Nigantha entered the wandering place in Rajagriha for some business. He saw the venerable Ashvajit walking and returning, looking slightly and looking in detail, contracting and stretching, adorned with a patched robe, a Dharma robe, and a begging bowl, begging for alms in Rajagriha, and saw him from afar. Having seen him, he thought: "Many renunciates have come and stayed here in Rajagriha, but I have never seen such conduct as this renunciate's before. I should go to him and ask him: 'Bhikkhu, who is your teacher? For what did you renounce? Whose Dharma do you like?'" Thinking thus, he stayed and sat mostly walking and returning at a large crossroads at the foot of a mountain. Then the venerable Ashvajit went to where the wandering ascetic Nigantha was. Then the wandering ascetic Nigantha said these words to the venerable Ashvajit: "Bhikkhu, who is your teacher? For what did you renounce? Whose Dharma do you like?" The venerable one said: "There is a renunciate of the Shakya clan, Gautama, who renounced from the Shakya clan, shaved his hair and beard, wore saffron robes, and renounced from home to homelessness with complete faith in the truth. He awakened to unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. He is my teacher. I renounced for him. I like his Dharma. Bhikkhu, please teach the Dharma for me!" The venerable one said: "I am a young and newly ordained renunciate, therefore it is not easy for me to fully and correctly explain the teachings of that Blessed One, Thus Come One, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One. The meaning of it should be explained in this way." The venerable one said: "Bhikkhu, I do not need many meaningful words, you teach whether the meaning is much or little." Then, at that time, the venerable Ashvajit spoke the verse: "The dharmas that arise from causes."

, and what is its cause and its cessation, all are declared by the Tathagata, the way of speaking like that is a great Shramana. When this Dharma discourse was spoken, the Dharma eye, without dust and without stain, arose in the Dharma of the wanderer Nige. Then, the wanderer Nige saw the Dharma, heard the Dharma, knew the Dharma, reached the depths of the Dharma, overcame hesitation, transcended doubt, did not rely on others, was not led by others, and having obtained fearlessness in the Dharmas of the Teacher's teachings, he rose from his seat, draped his upper garment over one shoulder, and bowed with folded palms to where the venerable Ashvajit was. At that time, he spoke the verses: This is the Dharma of the protectors, in countless billions of kalpas, never seen or heard before, to this immortal, sorrowless state, I follow and realize. Venerable one, where is the Blessed One dwelling now? Venerable one, he is in this very place, in the Bamboo Grove of Rajagriha, the abode of the Kalandaka birds. Then, the wanderer Nige praised and rejoiced in what the venerable Ashvajit had said. He bowed his head to the two feet of the venerable Ashvajit, circumambulated the venerable Ashvajit three times, and then departed, going to where the wanderer From-Tree-Born was. The wanderer From-Tree-Born saw the wanderer Nige from afar. Having seen him, he spoke thus to the wanderer Nige: Venerable one, your senses are subdued, your countenance is very clear, your complexion is very white, have you found the nectar? Venerable one, I have found it. Venerable one, therefore, please teach the Dharma. Then, the wanderer Nige spoke the verses at that time: Those dharmas that arise from a cause, and what is its cause and its cessation, all are declared by the Tathagata, the way of speaking like that is a great Shramana. Venerable one, please say it again. Venerable one, it should be said. Those dharmas that arise from a cause, and what is its cause and its cessation, all are declared by the Tathagata.
