Having gathered and stayed for seven days, three days, and twenty-one days, they held a grand birth celebration and named the child. Because this child was obtained from the palm of a god, they thought, "Let's name this Brahmin child 'Born from the Palm,'" and so they named him 'Born from the Palm.' Furthermore, because he was of the Maudgalyayana lineage, they thought, "Let's name this Brahmin child 'Son of Maudgalyayana,'" and so they also named him 'Son of Maudgalyayana.' Therefore, some knew the Brahmin child as 'Son of Maudgalyayana,' and some knew him as 'Born from the Palm.' This Brahmin child, Born from the Palm, was entrusted to eight nurses: two nurses who nurtured him in their palms, two nurses who nursed him, two nurses who wiped away his dirt, and two nurses who were his playmates. Those eight nurses nourished him with milk, yogurt, butter, ghee, the essence of butter, and other various essential items. They nurtured him, raising him quickly like a lotus growing in a pond. When he grew up, he became proficient in letters, numbers, arithmetic, manual calculation, subtraction, addition, placement, analysis, and reading. At that time, he became proficient in Brahmin rituals, conduct, cleanliness, and various customs, taking ashes, taking water pots, taking earth, gestures, hairstyles, words of praise, words of invocation, definite knowledge, knowledge of sacrifice, knowledge of poetry, knowledge of governance, and the six activities of Brahmins: performing sacrifices, causing others to perform sacrifices, reading, causing others to read, giving, and receiving. He became proficient in the branches of Brahmin knowledge, illuminating his own speech with wisdom like a flame, and able to refute the speech of others. After that, he was arranged to study all fields of knowledge. At another time, when he was reciting the Vedas with his father, he said, "What is the meaning of this 'Smṛti'?" The son said, "I also do not know the meaning of this 'Smṛti,' it is like this secret..."

These roots of words are the hymns proclaimed by the ancient sages, and they are correctly combined. Now, the Brahmins also follow and recite them. The root of the father's secret words, the hymns proclaimed by those ancient sages, and those that the Brahmins now follow and recite, do you think they are meaningless? Saying this, the meaning is this. The Brahmin boatman rejoiced, and from joy he thought: The son should do this, either inherit the father's tradition, or understand it more deeply, that's all. This Brahmin boy understands more deeply than I do, so he let about five hundred Brahmin boys recite the secret words of the Brahmins, and he also entrusted those secret words to them with joy. Brahmin boys grew up from infancy, and about five hundred Brahmin boys began to recite the secret words of the Brahmins. The daily behavior of the Brahmin boys was: when they were not reciting, sometimes they would go to the water's edge to wash, sometimes they would go to the city, and sometimes they would go to the woodpile where corpses were burned. When they had not recited for some time, they went to the city. The Brahmin boys of Brahmin boy Nyagya recited the secret words and went forward. The Brahmin boys of Brahmin boy Pangneje also recited the secret words, followed behind, and walked. The Brahmin boys of Pangneje heard the Brahmin boys of Nyagya reciting the root of the secret words, and said: Why do you recite the root of the secret words incorrectly? They said: How should it be recited? These roots of secret words should be recited like this and that. They said: From whom did you learn to recite these roots of secret words? They said: He who does not know this does not know the sun and the moon. In the village lived a Brahmin named Star King, whose son was called Brahmin boy Nyagya.

We read it from a place called "Earth." From whom did you read these foundations of secret words? They said: Whoever does not know this does not know the sun and the moon. In a village called "Rows of Trees," there lived a Brahmin reciter named "Holder of the Boat," and we read it from his son, a Brahmin boy named "Born from the Thigh." Then, the Brahmin boys of the neighboring kingdom became very angry and fearless. They went to where the Brahmin boy of the neighboring kingdom was, and he saw them from afar and said: Brahmin boys, what is the matter? The teacher has not made a mistake. He spoke a verse: All that is in the mind, Is clearly seen from the outside. The forms of sound, color, and senses, Cannot be completely hidden. Brahmin boys, what is wrong without fail? They explained the situation in detail, and he said: Brahmin boys, it is so, just as the Brahmin boys read those foundations of secret words, so they should be read, but I have shortened those long Vedas. Those short Vedas I have elaborated, reducing words and letters, but elaborating on meaning and definite words. The Brahmin boys of the Brahmin boy Born from the Thigh were also very angry and fearless. They went to where the Brahmin boy Born from the Thigh was, and he also saw them from afar and said: Brahmin boys, what is the matter? The teacher has not made a mistake. He also spoke a verse: All that is in the mind, Is clearly seen from the outside. The forms of sound, color, and senses, Cannot be completely hidden. Brahmin boys, what is wrong without fail? They explained the situation in detail, and he said: Brahmin boys, it is so, just as we read those foundations of secret words, so they should be read, but because that Brahmin boy is wise, he has shortened those long Vedas.
