Therefore, that first Bodhisattva should apply himself to hearing and reciting. Having heard extensively, he should apply himself to extreme solitude. Having become extremely solitary, he should apply himself to taking great delight in virtuous friends. Having taken great delight in virtuous friends, he should apply himself to ease of understanding the teachings. Having become easy to understand the teachings, he should apply himself to fearlessness. Having become fearless, he should apply himself to understanding the meaning. Having understood the meaning, he should apply himself to following the Dharma. Having followed the Dharma, he should apply himself to the nature of non-forgetfulness. Having become non-ignorant, he should apply himself to distinguishing the Dharma. Why is that? Because, as soon as one generates the mind of enlightenment, one will strive greatly for all the Buddha's teachings, and also for those states that one has previously attained, one will also cultivate oneself and not rely on others to attain them. O sons of the Victorious Ones, this is the establishment of the first Bodhisattva. O sons of the Victorious Ones, what is the establishment of the Yoga-practicing Bodhisattva? O sons of the Victorious Ones, the Yoga-practicing Bodhisattva understands all phenomena through ten objects of focus. What are the ten? They are: understanding all phenomena as impermanent, all phenomena as suffering, as selflessness, as emptiness, as immovability, as breathlessness, as non-abiding, as non-discrimination, as non-action, and as non-fabrication. Because he follows the Dharma, he does not act, nor does he not act. O sons of the Victorious Ones, this is the Yoga-practicing Bodhisattva. O sons of the Victorious Ones, that Yoga-practicing Bodhisattva should apply himself to examining the realm of sentient beings, apply himself to examining the realm of Dharma, apply himself to examining the realm of the world, apply himself to examining the earth element, as well as the water element, the fire element, and the wind element.
