The scent of white sandalwood reaches the heavenly realm in the time it takes for a bird to chirp seven times, and the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are pleased. The scent of red sandalwood reaches the heavenly realm in one hour, and the yidam deities of the mandala are pleased. The scent of black agarwood reaches the heavenly realm in thirty hours, and the Dharma protectors are pleased. The scent of guggul drives away demons. The scent of camphor cools the dwelling and relieves the body of heaviness. The scent of rue balances the elements of the body. The scent of black mica and ear horn is beneficial for treating yamanava. The steam of barley and the smoke of tsampa are beneficial for treating colds. The scent of black mu-zi can ward off epidemics and other contagious diseases. ༈ Next, examining the upright smoke of incense: As soon as the incense is lit, it must be observed for the duration of twenty-one breaths. That is, if the smoke rises straight up to the sky, one will have a long life and great wealth. If it goes down and coils on the ground, one's luck will be low, and there will be much illness and gossip. If the smoke goes south and breaks off in pieces, it is a sign of death. If it goes east quickly, one must travel far. If it floats north, a guest will come or one will have a good dream. If it goes west, there is neither good nor bad. If the smoke falls on oneself, it is a sign that one has great sins and obscurations, so one must strive to confess.
