So it was said. Thus, by loosening and looking, sometimes it stays still for a while, sometimes it scatters in all directions, appearing like water in a valley, which is the second experience. Then, it seems to stay flickering like a spark, as if thoughts have lessened, even if thoughts slightly scatter, it doesn't harm the staying, like a fish swimming in water, which is the third experience. Then, thoughts don't move much, even if they move a little, they stay like water and waves, not moving from that, flickering like a spark, it can be carried into all activities, which is the fourth experience, called like the ocean not moved by the wind. Furthermore, For most people, there is only a slight experience of the mind's abiding, and only a partial understanding of the direction of insight. They only see the three states of the mind's going, staying, and sitting, but few realize its essence as emptiness, only a little. Some are too strict, and as soon as a thought arises in the mind, they think it's too much movement, so they chase after it. By looking at its essence, it vanishes into emptiness, and they leave it in that state, thinking this is meditation. Continuing in this way, one or two non-thoughts arise in the stream of thoughts, but that's only a little. When thoughts scatter far away, they feel uncomfortable looking at them, so they pull them back to the heart and look at their essence, realizing emptiness. Is this the iron hook of meditation? That's only a little too. Thinking that it's not enough to protect the abiding, moving, and continuous states, they fabricate clarity and emptiness like the sky, etc. That's not meditation, but a rainbow of meditation, without essence. When a thought arises, the place of arising, the place of abiding, the place of ceasing, etc., looking at its essence is also necessary at the time of introduction, but not usually necessary. So, how should abiding and moving be managed? Whether abiding or moving, just stare at its essence, Without liking abiding or disliking moving, leave it naturally clear, managing it as if watching hail moving in the sky without concern. Just loosen and leave it in a non-distracted state. The ten signs etc. are said to be signs of meditating on single-pointedness, and especially signs of the path of the channels and winds, but for those with good constitutions, starting from the time of managing the third abiding, it may appear at any time up to the Great Perfection, so if you don't understand this, you deny that such a thing could appear, and some may even become frightened, yogis.

Just as it is said, "Anything can appear in the experience of...," although the essence is emptiness, just as it is said, "Everything arises from the unborn," although the sky is empty, just as anything such as clouds, rain, hail, and the light of the sun and moon can appear, various appearances arise. By holding the mind one-pointedly on that clear and bright state, as signs in the field of vision: like smoke, black and hazy; like a mirage, blue and shimmering; like a firefly, red and sparkling; like a butter lamp, flickering light; like the moon, white and bright; like the sun, clear and radiant; like the light of fire; like bindus and rainbows; and like the various forms of beings in the six realms, they appear clearly in the field of vision, or vaguely and dimly. Some appear actually, some appear in experience, and some appear before falling asleep, before dreaming. These are not the actual meaning of the emptiness of the mind's essence. In the Lankavatara Sutra, it says: "If yogis diligently practice, teaching children's play, meditation that distinguishes meaning, and likewise meditation that focuses on objects, (they will see) images like the sun and moon, like light and lotuses, like fire patterns in the sky, various signs will lead heretics astray, will cause the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas to fall into the realm of activity. When the signs become pure, at that time the hands of all the Buddhas, taken from all the Buddha-fields, will be applied to his head, this is a sign of entering the right path." Thus it is said. Therefore, although these signs are not the actual meditation, they are a precursor to quickly showing emptiness, like smoke appearing before a fire burns. Without affirming or denying any sign, just maintain it, and then luminous emptiness will appear. In the Ghanavyuha Sutra, it says: "Yogis clearly see that the sun is like the shape of the moon, like lotuses and light, like fire patterns in the sky. Abandoning all these, abide in non-appearance. When the signless Vajradhara is in a state of non-discrimination and non-attachment, then countless Buddhas will also be seen, abiding in equanimity in Buddha-fields and Buddha-fields. They will confer empowerment with their hands, conferring empowerment on his head, abiding on the Buddha-ground, various forms will arise, in various ways..."
