And ease and unease, without exhaling and inhaling, the equanimity of mind that is unwavering and pure in mindfulness, is the fourth dhyana. In the presence of the hero Rangjung Dorje (Tibetan name): Having investigation is the antidote, therefore, diligently strive one-pointedly, the fruit of joy and bliss will arise greatly, this is the first dhyana. Separated from investigation and one-pointed, the inner being extremely clear, having joy and bliss is the second dhyana. Separated from investigation, pleasure, and pain, possessing mindfulness and awareness, and one-pointed, is called the third dhyana. Investigation, pleasure and suffering, and the suffering of ease and unease, the exhaling and inhaling of ease and unease, without the eight faults and unwavering, the equanimity of pure mindfulness, is called the fourth dhyana. Thus it is said. Even if such a good calm abiding arises, if one cultivates it without attachment, it will lead to the path. If one clings to it and considers it supreme, thinking that it is meditation and practicing it, then temporarily one may obtain contaminated direct perception and miraculous powers, but one will not transcend samsara. One is born in the Brahma host, Brahma attendance, and Great Brahma realms by meditating on the first dhyana. One is born in the Small Light, Immeasurable Light, and Clear Light realms by meditating on the second dhyana. One is born in the Good, Small Good, and Immeasurable Good realms by meditating on the third dhyana. One is born in the Cloudless, Merit-born, and Great Fruit realms by meditating on the fourth dhyana. In those realms, one is born solely through calm abiding, and outsiders and Bonpos arise. Outsiders consider obtaining only this much as the ultimate result. The No Great, No Torment, Extremely Seen, Abundant Manifestation, and Akanistha are called the five abodes of the noble ones. One is not born solely through calm abiding, and ordinary beings are not born there either; it is solely the abode of the noble ones. Blocking the perception of grasping at characteristics in clarity and non-conceptuality is the attainment of non-perception. Blocking all appearances and attainments, meditating on consciousness like the sky is the infinity of consciousness. Since both object and subject are not established, and meditating on nothing being established, one is born in the realm of nothingness. Abandoning the coarse perception of nothingness, meditating on the subtle perception, thinking that it is neither existent nor non-existent, then.

They are born in the realm of neither perception nor non-perception. Although they excel in single-pointed concentration (shamatha), their minds are bound by subtle attachments. This is because they have not seen the nature of insight (vipashyana). Sarahas says, 'The innate mind is obscured by faults, causing all beings to be even more disgusted. The fault of pride cannot express it, and the whole world is deluded by meditation.' Thus it is said. Like this, merely cultivating shamatha, the greater the shamatha, the greater the power and qualities of vipashyana. If shamatha is small, the power of vipashyana is small, just as small clouds bring little rain, or little firewood makes a small fire. Therefore, now abandon other recitations and virtuous activities, and try to keep your mind single-pointedly focused as much as possible. In this way, request the object of shamatha, and dedicate the merit of practice to all sentient beings. Thinking this, repeat: 'May the merit be dedicated to all mother-like beings in the six realms.' Three times. This is the time for cultivating shamatha, the fifteenth Dharma talk. Then, the explanation of vipashyana: Vipashyana is wisdom, and it has both common and uncommon aspects. The first is the wisdom that individually examines and contemplates all phenomena, both internal and external. Some sutra systems describe this as wisdom. In the 'Hundred Verses on Wisdom,' it says, 'The blind with little learning do not know how to meditate. Without it, what can one contemplate? Therefore, one should strive to hear the teachings, and from this cause, contemplate and meditate properly, and vast wisdom will arise.' Although it is said like this, this refers to teaching the emptiness of wisdom. Among these, there are scriptures and instructions. The tantric scriptures say that first one must establish the view. If the view is not established, it becomes meaningless like an arrow without a target. But here, first, through practice, one experiences and naturally realizes the view, which is as profound as the instructions from the vidyadhara masters. In this regard, even if one accumulates vast amounts of skillful means and merit, if one does not realize the meaning of the emptiness of wisdom, one cannot be liberated from samsara. The 'Compendium' says, 'Billions of blind people without a guide, they do not know the path, how can they enter the city? Likewise, without wisdom, like the five perfections without eyes, without a guide, one cannot touch enlightenment.' Thus it is said. The accumulation of skillful means and merit is seized by the wisdom of emptiness.
