The one who makes offerings. Also, robes, alms, bedding, the causes for hearing [the Dharma], and many implements, these will not be exhausted until the attainment of unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment and Buddhahood. The meaning of what is said, such as this, is that by meditating solely on flawless shamatha, and by obtaining the fourth dhyana, such signs appear. This is mundane (with outflows) magical power, which also occurs in non-Buddhists and Bonpos. If such shamatha is attained and grasped by vipashyana, then it is supramundane (without outflows) magical power. Shamatha is the basis from which all the magical powers and qualities of the great accomplished ones of India and Tibet arise. Furthermore, if one does not meditate on dhyana, even if one strives for other roots of virtue, one will not be included in the ranks of the Sage's teachings. In the Sutra of Following the Roots of Virtue, it says: Even if one guards moral discipline for an eon, And cultivates patience for a long time, If one does not become accustomed to reality itself, Then in my teachings, that one is a Tirthika (non-Buddhist). Also, in the Sutra of Gaining Delightful Entry into the Womb, it says: Whoever has no samadhi mind, Has no pure wisdom; The outflows will not be abandoned; Therefore, you should strive diligently. Also, in the Sutra of Meeting Father and Son, it says: The Buddhadharmas, whatever they are, Cannot be seen by other paths; If great shamatha-wisdom is attained, Then it will certainly arise naturally. Also, in the Sutra of Showing Great Miracles, it says: No movement of the body, No movement of speech, No movement of mind, The three spheres are completely purified; this is a great miracle. Thus it is said. Such shamatha Meditation requires abandoning busyness and distraction. In the Sutra of Encouraging Higher Intention, it says: Maitreya, these are the twenty faults of busyness: What are the twenty? Namely, the body is not subdued, speech is not subdued, mind is not subdued, afflictions are great, one is stained by worldly talk, demons find an opportunity, one also relies on the unrestrained, and one does not attain shamatha and vipashyana. Also, in the Sutra of Moon Lamp, it says: Food, drink, and likewise clothing, Flowers, incense, and garlands, one should not offer to the supreme king; Whoever desires supreme enlightenment, And is disgusted by bad conditioned things, For the sake of sentient beings, Should dwell in solitude.

Staying in a place and abandoning seven steps, this is more excellent than that merit. Thus, conditioned phenomena are always tiresome, thus, there is no desire for anything in the world, and the various leakages will no longer increase. Thus, abandoning the attachment to towns and villages, constantly dwell in solitude and in the forest, constantly practice non-duality like a rhinoceros, and soon you will attain supreme samadhi. Thus it is said. Therefore, during this retreat period, it is necessary to abandon all distractions such as inviting guests, trading, and gossiping about sectarian biases. Moreover, all distractions of body, speech, and mind, such as prostrations and circumambulations, reciting scriptures and practicing Dharma, should be abandoned. The Bodhicharyavatara also says: Recitations and asceticism, even if practiced for a long time, if done with the mind distracted by other things, are said by the wise to be meaningless. Thus, those who wish to protect the precepts should diligently protect their minds. If they do not protect their minds, they will not be able to protect the precepts. Thus, if this mind is tamed, then everything will be tamed. If this mind is guarded, then everything will be guarded. Apart from the asceticism of guarding the mind, what is the use of many asceticisms? Thus, if the elephant of the mind is let loose, it will only cause the suffering of the Avici hell. If the elephant of the mind is tightly bound with the rope of mindfulness, then all fears will be eliminated and all happiness will be attained. Thus, for my gains and respect, the decline of body and livelihood, the mind should never decline. For those who want to protect the mind, mindfulness and awareness are necessary. Even if life is at stake, they should be protected. I thus join my palms in supplication. For the state of body and mind, one should repeatedly examine. In short, this is the characteristic of guarding awareness. Thus it is said. So, how to practice calm abiding? To this, there are two types of calm abiding: calm abiding with signs and calm abiding without signs. For both of these, the key points of the body are very important, as it says in the Padma Jala Tantra: On a very soft cushion, sit in the vajra posture, keep the body straight, lower the eyes to the tip of the nose, think slowly, harmonize the breath, do not let the tongue touch the palate, slightly contract the navel, and let the mind abide in concentration.
