Thus it is said: Do not think that what will not come in the future. Just as water droplets continuously fall, eventually filling a large vase, so too, the merit accumulated even slightly will cause the Dharma to flourish greatly. Therefore, even the smallest sins should be avoided, and even the smallest virtuous deeds should be diligently performed; this is very important. Next is the teaching about the infallibility of karmic results, as stated in the Sutra on Mindfulness: Fire may become cold, wind may be bound by ropes, the sun and moon may fall to the ground, but the ripening of karma can never be false. Also, as stated in the Hundred Karmas Sutra: The karmas of sentient beings, even after hundreds of kalpas, will not be lost. When conditions gather and the time is ripe, they will surely manifest their results. Also, as stated in the Sutra Requested by Glorious Hidden One: Good and non-good deeds done in the past will not be lost. The teachings to the wise will not be lost. The good speech of the noble Sangha will not be lost. Actions and their effects will never be lost. Also, as stated in the Collection of Specially Expressed Verses: There is no place where one can stay and not be overtaken by karma. Such a place does not exist anywhere, not in the sky, not on the ocean, not even by entering among the mountains. Also, as stated in the Nirvana Sutra: Whether one goes to the sky, the ocean, or the mountains and rocks, wherever one goes, one cannot escape the karma one has created. Thus it is said. Next is the explanation of what ripens first, as stated by the Noble Holder of Goodness: Whichever karmic result is heaviest, whichever faults are most familiar, from those deeds done in the past, the result will appear first. That is to say, the strongest ripens first. If they are equal in strength, then the one with the greater familiarity ripens first. If the familiarity is the same, then the karma created first ripens first. If these are all the same, then the thought that is clearest in the mind at the time of death will ripen first. To dispel wrong views about such karmic results, the karma created by others does not ripen on others, uncreated karma does not meet, and even if it is done for others, it ripens on oneself. In particular, the Excellent Praise states: Brahmins foolishly believe that good and evil can be transferred like giving and receiving. You say that what has been done will not be lost, and what has not been done will not meet. Also, as stated in the Mandala of the Sphere of Dharma: May all the roots of virtue from prayers be dedicated to accomplishing immeasurable benefit for beings. In the King of Samadhi Sutra, it is said: Even if that is done, it will not be untouched, and what is done by others will not be unfelt. Therefore, at the time of death, what I previously

Giving you the recitation of thirty-four million six-syllable mantras, or saying that I give you the hundred thousand circumambulations I did before, etc., will not be obtained. Because what others have done does not ripen for others, and it has not been said that it can be obtained through giving. After death, reciting this six-syllable mantra and dedicating it to you, etc., it is said that it can be obtained if you do good deeds and then dedicate them. The Tantra of Fully Embracing Qualities says: "When relatives and connections remain behind, whatever good deeds are done for the deceased, just as a calf follows behind its mother, wherever it abides, it follows." And it says: "The ripening result is like a calf behind its mother, wherever it goes, it follows." Likewise, buying the six-syllable mantra and circumambulations done before will not be obtained. Instead, one should have them newly recited and circumambulated, etc., and then give them food and offerings, because it is giving the opportunity to do good deeds, so it will be obtained. Similarly, even if one commits sins for the sake of officials and relatives, they will not help bear the burden; one must bear it alone. As it says in the "Friendly Letter": "Do not commit sins for the sake of your Brahmins, monks, gods, guests, parents, wives, and retinues, for there is no share in the ripening of hell." So, why are those who commit the most serious sins now enjoying happiness and well-being? The "Friendly Letter" says: "Some actions of sin do not cut like a sword immediately, but when the time of death comes, the result of the action of sin will become manifest." And the "Collection of Specially Expressed Verses" says: "As long as sin has not ripened, the child thinks it is sweet; when sin has ripened, then it becomes hot. As long as sin has not ripened, then it seems appropriate; when sin has ripened, then suffering will be seen." It is said that being happy after committing sin is a sign that all the roots of virtue from previous lives have been exhausted here, and that one is destined to be reborn in the lower realms in the future. Similarly, the "Collection of Specially Expressed Verses" says: "As long as goodness has not ripened, then virtue is seen as insignificant; when virtue has ripened, then virtue is seen as happiness." And the Sutra of the Perfection of Wisdom says: "Holding, reciting, and diligently
