Explaining is of no benefit to others; experience is just empty talk. Living in the mountains, one misses the valleys; living in the valleys, one misses the mountains. Without the confidence of decisiveness, one deceives others with pretense. Fearing that one's own pure lineage will be tainted, one does not confide in others. Inwardly, there is no doubt, secretly pleased; outwardly, one cultivates the appearance of being learned, virtuous, and good. Outwardly, one engages in jealousy and sarcasm. One does not even have a hair of a Han dog, yet one mocks others for being like tiger-dogs. One does not even have the beard of an old goat, yet one mocks others for having the tail of a yak. Names are given such as Dharma Changer, Realized One, Rinpoche, So-and-so Khenpo, So-and-so Jetsun. Many impure people wrapped in silk, these kinds of practitioners, appear here in Tibet. May we not mistake the object of our devotion! Thus it was said. Lamas are difficult to discern. Moreover, it is said in all the sutras and tantras that one should discern a lama based on their conduct and behavior. However, in the degenerate age, demons and evil spirits take on the appearance of learned, virtuous, and good people, leading sentient beings to lower realms. Padmasambhava said: Indian demons who pretend to be gods, and the nine-eyed demons who descend to the human realm, their magical displays are in the form of local deities and bodhisattvas. Their discriminating wisdom is extraordinary, and everything is perfectly pure. Just seeing them, faith arises. Thus it was said. In the sutras of the Bhagavan, it is also said that demons appear in the guise of khenpos and acharyas. Therefore, one should not trust solely in outward conduct that is disciplined and gentle. One should not rely solely on being skilled in terminology and words. If there is no experience of liberation, some demons and evil spirits can also be like those who have memorized many sutras. Similarly, one should not believe solely in those who claim to be tertöns, because there are similar termas and false termas that appear. So, who should one trust? Padmasambhava has no partiality or self-interest. He certainly possesses unobstructed direct perception of the three times. He clearly sees the good and bad karma and the lineages of all sentient beings. Therefore, the prophecies of Padmasambhava's termas, from the qualified old and new termas, the lamas who give meaningful prophecies to those who have a connection, one should seek refuge in such lamas as the ultimate refuge. Moreover, the previous prophecies are the evidence; the current

There is no definitive conclusion regarding garlic. In the Lotus-Born Guru's "Lotus Garland of Instructions," it says: "Guru Rinpoche said, 'My emanations are called imposters. Do not place your hopes for this life and the next on these imposters. Their memory is unclear, and they cannot distinguish between good and evil; their knowledge is superficial, and they cannot grasp the essence of the Dharma. Therefore, the teachings of demons flourish.'" Therefore, having abandoned bad lamas, what kind of good lama should one rely on? Guru Rinpoche said: "In general, one who is skilled in the three aspects of the Great Vehicle—words, meaning, and practice; the generation stage, completion stage, and recitation; the three—view, meditation, and action; and who has attained signs and warmth in the three—ground, path, and fruition; one who personally experiences and diligently practices; one who is skilled in guiding others and has great compassion; one who possesses realization of the guru's intention; one who embraces pure appearance and compassion; one who has abandoned attachment to this life and strives for the meaning of the next; one who has the blessings of the lineage and is endowed with the qualities of practice—such a person should be relied upon as a wish-fulfilling jewel." In particular, those who are prophesied in the old prophecies of Guru Rinpoche, and those who are prophesied as the destined Dharma lords of various treasure troves, are the supreme gurus for practicing Dzogchen. Even if not directly indicated by prophecy, if one practices according to the teachings of a prophesied guru and generates special realization in one's being, becoming a realized yogi, one can also be a suitable guru for practicing Dzogchen. If such a guru is not found, then, rather than seeking fame, in this degenerate age, due to the power of karma, the faults and qualities of gurus are mixed together, and there is no one who is completely without faults. If someone has outstanding qualities and is skilled in utilizing those qualities, then disciples should rely on them. Therefore, if such a guru is not found, then between faults and qualities, it is permissible to rely on someone with more qualities, as stated in the commentary on the Kalachakra Tantra. Then, the qualities of the disciple are also important. Guru Rinpoche said: 'Not examining the disciple is the demon of the Dharma.' Also, in the "One Section of the Secret Chapter," it says: 'Do not be annoyed by those without fortune, do not burden the guru, do not break the guru's commands, do not be narrow-minded, do not be lazy in practice, do not be unable to keep secrets. Do not propagate to such a ripened but bad vessel, seal it tightly with secrecy. To a person who does not possess the capacity, even if you teach the profound Dharma, they will misunderstand it, like a hungry ghost seeing food as an enemy.'
