Those who have property will snatch from each other when they are about to die, alas, they regret, it seems a bit late. Thus it is said. Because there are many things that harm life, one will die quickly. In the Ratnavali it says: The Lord of Death dwells in the midst of conditions, like a candle in a red wind. And it says: The causes of death are many, but the causes of life are few. Those very things are also causes of death, therefore accumulate Dharma. Also, in the Suhrllekha it says: Life is unstable, blown by many harmful winds, even more so than a bubble of water. It is very wonderful to wake up from exhaling, inhaling, and sleeping. Also, in the Sikshasamuccaya it says: Like the flame of a candle moved by a strong wind, there is no certainty that this life will last even for a moment. Thus it is said. The causes of death are many, the causes of life are few. The causes of life are food, clothing, and medicine, but these themselves often become causes of death. In the Arya Ksitigarbha Sutra it says: To keep this body alive, one is satisfied with food but dies, and to pursue enjoyment for happiness, it becomes an uncertain cause of death. Also, in the Bhagavan Bhaisajyaguru Sutra it says: When sentient beings are afflicted by disease, even if the disease is not very serious, they do not have medicine and service, or the doctor does something that should not be done, this is the first untimely death. The second untimely death is: being executed by the king's punishment. The third untimely death is: those who are very negligent and live in negligence, are deprived of their essence by non-humans. The fourth untimely death is: being burned to death by fire. The fifth untimely death is: being drowned by water. The sixth untimely death is: falling into lions, tigers, foxes, snakes, and fierce beasts and dying. The ninth untimely death is: not finding food and drink, being forced by hunger and thirst to die. In short, these are the great untimely deaths taught by the Tathagata, and there are countless and immeasurable other untimely deaths. Thus it is said. Therefore, four hundred and four diseases, eighty thousand demons, etc., harm life and lead to death.

There are many causes of death. Although medicine, food, and clothing are the causes of life, they themselves can become causes of death if used improperly. Dying for the sake of food and clothing, children being suffocated by clothing, food poisoning, medication errors, and so on, become many causes of death. Because the body has no essence, it will certainly die. This body has nothing but thirty-six impure substances. There is not a single hard essence. The "Bodhicharyavatara" says: First, separate this layer of skin with your own wisdom. From the network of flesh and tendons, separate it with the sword of wisdom. The bones are also separated, and you should look at them all the way to the soles of your feet. What essence is there in this? You should observe it yourself. It is said. The "Ratnakuta Sutra" says: The body is like a bubble. No essence can be found there. It is said. The way to meditate on death through examples is: An arrow shot into the sky does not stay for a moment and goes away. Like water flowing downwards and the steps of being led to the execution ground, it is close to death. The "Compendium of Trainings" says: Like a rushing river, there is no turning back. Similarly, the life of a person passes away and will not turn back. It is said. The "Compendium of Trainings" says: Like the flow of a great river, it goes away and never returns. It is said. The "Bark Sutra" says: Like a prisoner being led to the execution ground, each step is lost and close to death. It is said. For example, a great warrior puts an arrow on the bow, and without stopping, quickly shoots it to the target. The lives of people are also like that. It is said. Another way to meditate on impermanence is: It is said that it is easier to generate impermanence by meditating in a charnel ground. We ourselves should also count how many people have died in the place and village where we live? How many people of the same age as us have died? They also could not stay as long as they wanted. I should think the same way. Also, when you see a dead body and bones, you should think: Alas! When will I become like this? The "Bodhicharyavatara" says: The body of another that was abandoned in the charnel ground, swollen, with scattered shapes, bones like the color of ashes, scattered in all directions, my body will also become like that. "Bodhicharyavatara".

From... (Note: The preceding text is omitted, so a complete translation is not possible.) Having gone to the charnel ground, the bones of others and my own body, are all of the nature of impermanence. When will I equalize them? Thus it is said. The meaning of these, Orgyen Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) said: Without understanding non-thought and non-reliance, still clinging and attached to this samsara, desiring happiness, life is spent in misery. And: Wasting precious human life by being distracted on the path. And: A dying patient is like a lamp with exhausted oil. The causes for the increase of life are exhausted, and there is no power to stay. And: If one says there is still time to practice Dharma, but there is no certainty of dying today or tomorrow, think well! Countless are those who are radiant today but become stiff and black corpses tomorrow. Those...
