Like us, watching the dance of birth, aging, sickness, and death of sentient beings. The life of a person is like a flash of lightning in the sky, flowing swiftly like a waterfall cascading down a cliff. Thus it is said. The Blessed One said: Accumulation will eventually be exhausted, the high will surely fall, meeting will eventually lead to separation, and the living will eventually die. Thus it is said. In the Sutra of Advice to King Clear Light, it is said: Great King, just as if four strong, stable, and towering mountains were to collapse from the four directions, grinding grass, trees, shrubs, and all living beings into powder and turning them into dust. In such a situation, is it easy to escape quickly, or to resist with strength, or to bribe with wealth, or to prevent with mantras, medicines? Similarly, all sentient beings will face the four great fears of sickness, aging, death, and decay. In such a situation, is it easy to escape quickly, or to resist with strength, or to bribe with wealth, or to prevent with mantras, medicines? Thus it is said. Regarding this, there are two types: cultivating impermanence oneself and applying it to the mindstream of others. Cultivating impermanence oneself is: In the Dharani Sutra of the Auspicious Night, it is said: Who knows if one will die tomorrow, therefore one should diligently practice today. The great army of the Lord of Death is not your friend. Thus it is said. In the Bodhisattvacharyavatara, it is said: It is unreasonable to live comfortably thinking that one will not die today. The moment I cease to exist, that will be the time when demons devour me. Who can grant me fearlessness? How can I be certain of liberation? When demons devour me, how can my mind be at ease? Thus it is said. In this life and in this world, having abandoned all relatives and friends, one must go alone to another world. What is the use of love and hate? Thus it is said. Thus, in cultivating death, there are also: first, cultivating death; cultivating the characteristics of death; cultivating the exhaustion of life; cultivating separation. First, cultivating death is: In the Sutra of Cultivating Impermanence, it is said: Even without illness, there is impermanence; even youth is impermanent; even life is impermanent; even wealth is impermanent. Birth is uncertain, threatened by it, how can joy arise from the pleasures of desire? Thus it is said. In the Nirvana Sutra, it is said: If there is birth, there must be death; if there is prosperity, there must be decline; even youth is impermanent; the appearance of prosperity.

And also snatched by disease, the life of living is also snatched by death, there is nothing that is permanent. As it is said in the Jataka: Even if one has methods and power, there is no escape from death and old age. As it is said in the Karma Shataka: Born to die, having the nature of being controlled by others, death seems to be something to be done, but living does not seem to be. As it is said in the Bodhisattva Pitaka: The dewdrop on the tip of the grass, when the sun has fully risen, disappears in an instant, so is the life of a human being. Just as the leaves, flowers, and fruits of a tree's branches, all have the nature of falling, so is the life of a human being. The body is impermanent and unstable, like an empty bubble, a water bubble, like an illusion, like a dance. Just as clouds and lightning do not stay, so too does life change in an instant. One should take essence from what is without essence. As Kamalaśīla said: The world is impermanent, like a rainbow that fades. Years, months, days, and numbers are close to death, even children, grandchildren, and friends, must eventually disappear like camphor. As the noble Nāgārjuna said: If a fire suddenly breaks out on your head or clothes, even if you have to abandon other tasks to stop it, you should strive to ensure that there is no rebirth, there is nothing more important than that. As it is said in the Tale of the Seven Daughters: Look at the body and life that will be abandoned, like dew on water and grass. The above is about contemplating the impermanence of death. Second, contemplating the characteristics of death: In the Sutra of Advice to the King, it says: Great King, you will abandon this world, you will go to another world, the great one will be carried away, you will enter the great darkness, you will fall into a great cliff, you will enter a dense forest, you will go to a solitary place, you will be carried away by the great ocean, you will be driven by the wind of karma, you will go to a place without a foothold, there is no other protector than the Dharma, no other refuge, no other support. Great King, at that time, the Dharma will become your great island, your place, protector, refuge, support, friend, and teacher. As it is said in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: This unreliable Lord of Death, whether one has done or not done, does not stay, whether one is sick or not sick, everyone cannot suddenly trust in life. Everything will be abandoned.
