Oh! If you scatter peas on the surface of a drum, it's difficult for them to stick; even if one sticks, it's only one. All the others fall to the ground, just like that. Look at how difficult it is for sentient beings to obtain a human body! So it is said. In another sutra, the Blessed One said to Ananda: If you hold a needle's eye up in the sky and scatter a handful of mustard seeds, the chance of a mustard seed falling into the needle's eye is very small. If you throw a handful of peas against a wall, the chance of a pea sticking to the wall is very small. Likewise, the chance of obtaining a human body is very small. So it is said. In terms of numbers, what is difficult to obtain is this: The Blessed One said that the three lower realms are like the dust of the great earth, while being born as a human is like the dust on a fingernail. And also, for example, if there is a large pile of grain, the root is the number of hells and other lower realms, the waist is the number of gods and demigods, and the top is only the number of human bodies. So it is said. Even if you gather the army of a great king, it would not equal the number of ants in a large anthill, so you should know how difficult it is to obtain a human body. The reason why you must extract the essence from such a rare human body is explained: In the Bodhicharyavatara, it says: This leisure is extremely difficult to obtain, it is able to accomplish the meaning of human life, if I do not make use of it now, how will I obtain it again later? So it is said. The term 'person' (སྐྱེས་བུ་) is translated from the Sanskrit word (梵文天城体:पुरुष,梵文罗马拟音:puruṣa,汉语字面意思:普鲁沙), which means strength or ability. Relying on this precious human body, one can attain the state of gods and humans, one can attain the state of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, because one has the ability to attain complete and perfect Buddhahood, therefore it is called a 'person'. Although a wish-fulfilling jewel can produce food, wealth, and enjoyment, it does not have such great power, so the human body is more precious than a wish-fulfilling jewel, therefore it is called a precious human body. The time to obtain such a body is only now, it will not be found again and again, so now you must strive in the sacred Dharma. The meaning is: In the Letter to a Friend, it says: Whoever obtains that which can cross the ocean of birth and death, and also sow the seed of supreme enlightenment, whose qualities are far superior to a wish-fulfilling jewel, who would make this human existence fruitless? The Sugata's path shows the way to guide all beings, becoming a great power for sentient beings.
