Those with great magical power, those with such great power and such great authority, also touch with their hands and control with their bodies up to the world of Brahma. Because they possess such physical diligence, that form of magical power, in the immeasurable, countless, and inconceivable realms of the ten directions, wherever there are as many Buddhas, Bhagavat, residing and maintaining, and places where the Dharma is taught, they go and offer robes, food, bedding, medicine, and many provisions to those Buddhas, Bhagavat. Those robes, food, bedding, medicine, and many provisions will not be exhausted until they attain the unexcelled, perfectly complete enlightenment and Buddhahood. As it is said, the meaning of such things is that merely meditating on flawless shamatha, when the fourth dhyana is attained, such signs appear. This is contaminated magical power, which also occurs in non-Buddhists and Bonpos. If such shamatha is attained and grasped by vipashyana, it is uncontaminated magical power. The basis for the arising of all the magical powers and qualities of the great accomplished ones of India and Tibet is shamatha. Furthermore, if one does not cultivate dhyana, even if one strives for other virtuous roots, one will not be included in the ranks of the Sugata's (Shakyamuni Buddha) teachings. In the Sutra of Following the Roots of Virtue, it says: "For eons, one may protect morality, and for a long time, one may cultivate patience, but if one does not become accustomed to the true nature, then one is a heretic in my teachings." Also, in the Sutra of Gaining Entrance into the Womb, it says: "Whoever does not have a mind of samadhi, does not have pure wisdom, and cannot abandon the defilements. Therefore, you should diligently strive." Also, in the Sutra of the Meeting of Father and Son, it says: "The Buddhas and Dharmas, wherever they are, cannot be seen by other paths. If one obtains great wisdom of shamatha and vipashyana, it will certainly arise naturally." Also, in the Sutra of Showing Great Miracles, it says: "No movement of the body, no movement of speech, no movement of mind, the complete purification of the three spheres, this is a miracle." Thus it is said. To cultivate such shamatha, one must abandon busyness and distraction. In the Sutra of Encouraging Higher Intention, it says: Maitreya, busyness has twenty faults.

These are, what are the twenty? They are: the body is not restrained, speech is not restrained, mind is not restrained, afflictions are great, contaminated by worldly talk, taken advantage of by demons, also relying on carelessness, and not attaining calm abiding and insight, and so on. Also, in the "Moon Lamp Sutra" it says: "Food and drink, as well as clothes, flowers, incense, and garlands, will not serve and honor the supreme king. If someone desires to attain perfect enlightenment, and is weary of evil deeds, for the sake of sentient beings, dwells in a solitary place, abandoning seven steps, this is more excellent than the former merit." It also says: "That person is always weary of conditioned phenomena, that person has no desire for anything in the world, and defilements will not increase." It also says: "Abandoning the love for towns and cities, always dwell in solitary forests, like a rhinoceros, always practice non-duality, and soon you will attain the supreme samadhi." Thus it is said. Therefore, during this retreat, it is necessary to abandon all distractions such as inviting guests, doing business, discussing sectarian biases, and so on. Moreover, all distractions of body, speech, and mind, such as prostrations, circumambulations, reciting scriptures, and practicing Dharma, should be abandoned. In the Bodhicharyavatara, it also says: "Recitation and asceticism, even if practiced for a long time, if the mind is distracted by other things, then according to wisdom, these are meaningless." It also says: "Those who wish to guard the precepts should diligently guard their minds. If they do not guard their minds, they cannot guard the precepts." It also says: "By binding this one mind, all of them are bound; by taming this one mind, all of them are tamed; apart from guarding the mind, there is no other asceticism, so what is the use of doing many ascetic practices?" It also says: "If the elephant of the mind is let loose, it will only cause the suffering of the Avici hell; if the elephant of the mind is tightly bound with the rope of mindfulness, then all fears will disappear, and all happiness will come into your hands." It also says: "My gains and honors, body and life may decline, but the mind should never decline. For those who wish to guard the mind, mindfulness and awareness are essential, and they should be guarded even at the risk of life. I am like that.
