With faith in the three times, with mandala flowers in folded hands, serving the teacher and guru, prostrating at the feet with the crown of the head. Thus it is said. That is for one's own root guru who possesses the qualities of a Vajra Master. If one has requested Dharma from those who do not possess the qualities, or from ordinary people, how should one act? In the very text of the Fifty Verses on the Guru, it says: For a householder or a novice, in order to avoid worldly scorn, placing the sacred Dharma and so forth in front, one should prostrate with devotion, holding to ascetic practices. Offering a seat and rising, and serving in matters of importance, with respect as an ascetic, one should abandon prostrations to those who are not holy. One should give to those who are agreeable. Therefore, one always relies on life from harms such as epidemics. What need is there to mention wavering enjoyments? If one gives in this very life, then one should always protect one's own vows. Whatever is slightly pleasing, which one desires to be inexhaustible, will become a gift. That giving is a collection of merit. Thus it is said. How then should one serve a holy guru? To the guru, one should offer with respect. Afterwards, one will not be born in the fields. One's own vow teacher, one should not give away sons and wives. For whatever reason, in countless eons, it is difficult to find. Even the Buddhas are diligent, always worshiping the Tathagatas, and always offering to the guru. This is the same as all the Buddhas, and is especially distinguished. One should give this and that to the guru. By giving that, to all the Buddhas, one always attains supreme accomplishment from the gathering. Therefore, a disciple with courage, endowed with the qualities of discipline and patience, should not always regard the guru and the Vajra Holder as different. Fearing the sin of destroying a stupa, one should not even step on the shadow. What need is there to mention stepping on shoes, cushions, and mounts? With great intelligence and joyful mind, one should listen diligently to the guru's commands. If one cannot do it with intelligence, then one should purify it with words. To the guru, one obtains accomplishment, heaven, and bliss. Therefore, with all effort, one should not transgress the guru's commands. The guru's place is like one's life. The guru's suffering is also like the guru. One should always think of his retinue as one's relatives, treating them equally. Thus it is said.

How should one perform the actions of serving the Guru? As it is said in the very text of the 'Fifty Verses on the Guru': Do not sit or lie on the bed or seat, prepare it beforehand; do not touch the Guru's knees with your head; do not place your feet on the seat, do not place your hands on your waist, and do not massage the Guru's body. When the Guru is standing or sitting, do not lie down or sit. Always diligently do the Guru's work, be skilled in rising, and do it perfectly. Do not discard saliva, mucus, or other impurities, do not stretch your legs on the seat, do not quarrel, argue, or speak loudly; these should not be done in front of the Guru. Do not rub your limbs, dance, do not sing or play music, and do not engage in lengthy conversations where the Guru can hear. Rise from the seat respectfully, and sit down respectfully. On roads that are dark, watery, or dangerous, go ahead after hearing the Guru's instructions. When the teacher sees you, a wise person should not twist their body, or lean on pillars or other objects, do not count with your fingers. When yawning or coughing, cover your mouth with your hand. Washing feet, washing the body, wiping the body, massaging, and so on, do these for the Guru first, and then do them for yourself. If you mention the Guru's name, add respectful terms such as 'Venerable' after the name. To show respect to others, use special titles. Value the Guru's teachings, and say, 'I will do as you instruct,' join your palms and without distraction, listen to the Guru's instructions. After finishing the task, report with gentle words. Sit obediently in front of the Guru, arrange your clothes and appearance, kneel, join your palms, and make requests three times with a respectful attitude. In all actions of serving the Guru, do not have pride in your heart. With shame, fear, and restraint, abide like a new bride. All frivolous actions should be avoided in front of the teacher. Other similar actions should also be self-examined and avoided. In empowerments, mandalas, fire offerings, gathering disciples, teaching, and where the Guru resides, do not act without permission. All the wealth you receive, such as consecration, offer it to the Guru. After receiving the Guru's teachings, give freely to others. The Guru's disciple should not become your disciple, and do not prevent others from serving, rising, prostrating, etc., to the Guru in front of the Guru and disciples. Offer all offerings to the Guru.
