Meditating in this way on all beings, if one's hairs stand on end and tears well up due to compassion, that is great compassion. If this compassion is without partiality towards all beings, that is immeasurable compassion. Likewise, loving-kindness and compassion also include joy and equanimity. Wishing that all beings may not be separated from the supreme bliss free from suffering is joy. Wishing for them without near and far or partiality is equanimity. The four immeasurables are the pillars of the Mahayana path and the preliminary for all tantric practices, so they are very important. Like this, without the good motivation of loving-kindness, compassion, and the mind of enlightenment, even if one practices the generation and completion stages of tantra, it is difficult to go on the path to enlightenment, except for eliminating the obstacles of this life. Therefore, it is very important to combine the root of the Great Vehicle, loving-kindness and compassion, and meditate on them as one. The *Sutra of Inexhaustible Intelligence* says: "Bodhisattvas abide in great compassion, not clinging to their own happiness, but giving it to sentient beings. They have no difficulty in taking on the suffering of sentient beings." Furthermore, the *Bodhicharyavatara* says: "All the happiness there is in this world comes from desiring others to be happy, and all the suffering there is in this world comes from desiring oneself to be happy. What need is there to say much more? Observe this distinction: the childish work for their own benefit, the Buddhas work for the benefit of others." If one does not genuinely exchange one's own happiness for the suffering of others, one will not attain Buddhahood, and there will be no happiness even in samsara. Therefore, in order to pacify one's own harm and to pacify the suffering of others, one should give oneself to others and protect others as oneself. As it is said, therefore, give all your happiness, well-being, merit, and roots of virtue to sentient beings, and you must take on all the suffering, sins, and obscurations of all sentient beings. However, since one cannot actually do this until one has attained the ground, one can gain great merit even by meditating on exchanging oneself with others in one's mind. The *Bodhicharyavatara* says: "Those who wish to quickly protect themselves and others should practice the supreme secret of exchanging themselves with others." Furthermore, Orgyen Rinpoche said: "Meditate on unbearable compassion for the six kinds of beings, who are all your parents, and then self and others."

As it is said, "The great hero, with single-pointedness, does not waver," when air flows out of your nostrils, contemplate that all your merit and roots of virtue dissolve into all sentient beings, so that all sentient beings possess immeasurable happiness. When air flows in from your nostrils, contemplate that all the sins, obscurations, and sufferings of all sentient beings, without exception, dissolve into you, so that all sentient beings are free from all suffering. In this way, if you meditate at least twenty-one times a day, or at least seven times, without interruption, you will immediately avoid any disease, evil spirits, or obstacles, and ultimately obtain the boundless benefits of attaining complete and perfect Buddhahood. Furthermore, if we divide the four immeasurables, such as loving-kindness and compassion, each can be divided into three. The Sutra of Inexhaustible Intelligence says: Loving-kindness focused on sentient beings is for bodhisattvas who have initially generated the mind [of enlightenment]; loving-kindness focused on phenomena is for bodhisattvas who have entered into practice; loving-kindness without focus is for bodhisattvas who have obtained forbearance in the unborn dharma. Moreover, the Bodhisattva Pitaka also says: What are the three types of compassion? They are as follows: compassion focused on sentient beings, compassion focused on phenomena, and compassion without focus. As it is said, now is the time to cultivate the four immeasurables, such as loving-kindness and compassion focused on sentient beings, as mentioned above, while loving-kindness and compassion focused on phenomena and without focus will be explained when elucidating the essential points. Therefore, in order to prevent the merit of generating the mind of enlightenment, receiving the guidance of loving-kindness and compassion, and wanting to practice its meaning from diminishing, please dedicate with the mind of enlightenment and repeat after me: May the virtue be dedicated to all mother-like beings in the six realms. Repeat three times. Thus, the generation of the Mahayana mind and the guidance of loving-kindness and compassion is the tenth teaching session. Then, the second special preliminary practice, the guidance of the mandala, will be explained. The reason why the mandala comes before Vajrasattva in other guides is that the object of refuge, the object of generating the mind [of enlightenment], and the object of offering the mandala are all one in aim.
