And, in order to be protected from all obstacles and faults in practicing the view and meditation of channels, winds, and bindus, we take refuge. As the great master of Oddiyana (Padmasambhava) said: In the appearance of devotion, visualize all the objects of refuge in the space in front of you as dense as clouds. With a yearning like wanting to be freed from enemies and prison, with oneself and one's parents as the main focus, and all sentient beings, not just with words. As it is said, the refuge can be whatever one knows, whether extensive or concise. Now, empowered by great blessings, this refuge verse that comes from the Vajra words, the first two lines clarify the object of refuge, and the latter two are the actual taking of refuge, so please repeat this three times. In the space in front, to Samantabhadra, surrounded by immeasurable Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. To Samantabhadra, the victorious one, and all the sons, I take refuge with single-pointed mind. Three times. Oh, in this way, even if you have not previously received the refuge vows in your continuum, they will arise; if you have received them, they will increase; if they have deteriorated, they will be restored. Therefore, having received the Mahayana refuge vows, you must protect them. In the "Seventy Verses on Taking Refuge in the Three Jewels": Taking refuge in the Three Jewels is the basis of the eight precepts. And in the "Great Nirvana Sutra": Whoever takes refuge in the Buddha is a true layperson, and at no time will they take refuge in other gods. Having taken refuge in the sacred Dharma, one is free from the mind of harming and killing. Having taken refuge in the Sangha, one does not prostrate to non-Buddhists. And in the "Root Sutra": Do not prostrate to other gods, do not make offerings, do not show respect. If you go to a (non-Buddhist) place, stand up openly and recite the verses of the scriptures, thereby benefiting them. And in the "Seventy Verses on Taking Refuge in the Three Jewels": Whoever takes refuge in the Three Jewels, having vowed to be a layperson, must protect these three refuges, and not offer or prostrate to all non-Buddhists with respect. And in the "Six Branches of Taking Refuge": For the image of the Buddha and the scriptures, and the monastic robe sewn with yellow patches, show them with faith. For all that is spoken by the Buddha, do not slander, but place it on the crown of your head. Regard both pure and impure individuals as sacred.

It is like this. It is said in the 'Friendly Epistle': "How the body of the Sugata, even if made of wood, should be revered, and the wise should make offerings." Also, in the 'Sutra Requested by the Lord of Gods': "Trading for profit and deceiving for friendship, those who perform this act of cutting off will go to hell, such as Avici, like an arrow shot by a man." Therefore, destroying or trading Buddha images, scriptures, and stupas is a serious offense and will break the vows. It is said in the 'Garland of Birth Stories': "The banner of the tomb of the Able One, Brahma and Indra, etc., even the great beings of the world, take it to the top of their heads and place it in a place of offering." The Blessed One said: "Even if the champaka flower is old, it is better than all other ordinary flowers; even if my monk breaks the precepts, he is better than all other heretics." In the past, a person violated the king's law and was abandoned in a cemetery. Because he had a piece of kasaya cloth around his neck, the Rakshasa did not eat his flesh and bowed to him. Also, a hunter wearing a kasaya cloth, an elephant saved him from the king's harm and respected him. There are many such stories, so even wearing yellow monastic robes should be respected. Buddha images, whether good or bad, should be respected; even a single letter of the Dharma should be respected; one should not worship non-Buddhist deities; one should not associate with non-Buddhist followers; one should abandon harming sentient beings; one should diligently take refuge in the morning and evening; one should offer the essence of food and drink to the Three Jewels; no matter what illness or suffering occurs, one should not seek refuge other than the Three Jewels. It is very important to protect these nine precepts without fail. If one protects them in this way, the benefits are immeasurable. It is said in the 'Ornament of the Sutras': "Taking refuge here is of great benefit, for it increases the immeasurable collection of qualities; this practice pervades with compassion, and the unequaled and supreme Dharma also increases." It is also said: "Always all the hosts of afflictions, and all evil deeds and sins, from old age and death, the Buddha himself completely protects all those who harm. And from evil destinies and means, and from the fearsome hosts and inferior vehicles, for the sake of protection, the supreme refuge." The world is like
