The mind of the root guru is Buddha, the speech is the sacred Dharma, and the body is the Sangha. One should know that the guru is the embodiment of all the Three Jewels. Next is the actual explanation of taking refuge: In the Vajra verse it says: 'In the sky in front, the Samantabhadra, surrounded by countless Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, I take refuge with one-pointed mind in the Samantabhadra and all the Buddhas.' And, in the commentary spoken directly by the Great Compassionate One, it says: 'Now in the sky in front of oneself, the Dharmakaya Samantabhadra resides, surrounded like a market by countless Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. I take refuge with one-pointed mind in all the Samantabhadra and the Buddhas who reside.' The meaning of what was said is: You should visualize in this way. On this basis in front, visualize a great ocean of nectar with eight qualities, the edge spread with malachite and golden sand, various water birds making pleasant sounds, and scattered with various jewels and flowers. In the center of the ocean, from (seed syllable) པཾ་ (Tibetan, Devanagari: वं, Romanized Sanskrit: vaṃ, Literal Chinese meaning: वं) arises a lotus stem, branches and leaves extending in ten directions, and on the fruit are born eight auspicious symbols and various jewels. On top of it, visualize a four-petaled lotus flower made of various jewels, its size equal to the three thousand great thousand worlds. On its pistil and four petals, visualize a jewel throne each, and on the central throne, on a lotus and moon cushion, is the Dharmakaya Samantabhadra, inseparable from the root guru, body color blue, with the mudra of meditation, sitting in vajra posture, embracing the consort Samantabhadri inseparable. Around him are the five Buddha families, father and mother, the sixth Vajradhara, and countless Sambhogakaya Buddhas, all residing in union of father and mother. Above that are all the gurus of the mind transmission of the Buddhas, the sign transmission of the vidyadharas, and the personal ear-whispered transmission, as well as the eight great vidyadharas of India, the twenty-five kings and subjects of Tibet, and a hundred vidyadhara treasure revealers, all naked, adorned with six bone ornaments, holding hand drums and bells, wearing tiger skin loincloths, and elephant skin

Wearing a garment of animal skin, dancing with trembling and swaying movements, abiding in the intention to bless the fortunate ones. On the throne to the right is the Teacher Shakyamuni Buddha, surrounded by the Seven Buddhas and the one thousand and two Buddhas of the Fortunate Aeon, all in the form of emanations, clad in the three Dharma robes, with the earth-pressing meditative posture. Adorned with the thirty-two major marks and eighty minor marks, blazing with light and rays of light. On the throne behind are all the Sutras and Tantras of the Three Baskets and the Six Tantra Classes, and especially the six hundred and forty thousand Tantras of the Great Perfection, all in the form of scripture volumes, with golden covers gleaming brightly. On the throne to the left is Guru Padmasambhava, in the form of a monk, holding a begging bowl in his hand. The eight close disciples and sixteen heroes, etc., and all the Bodhisattvas who are abiding on the path, the eight great Shravakas, the twelve Pratyekabuddhas, the sixteen Arhats, the sixty-four thousand Arhats, etc., all the Sangha of the Great and Small Vehicles. All the Bodhisattvas are in the form of youthful gods, adorned with silk and jewels. All the Shravakas are with shaven heads and bare feet, wearing the three Dharma robes. On the throne in front is our Tibetan deity, the Yidam Great Compassionate One, surrounded by the deities of the six great Tantra Classes, such as the Kadam Phurba, and in the spaces between them, the heroes and Dakinis of the twenty-four lands, the Wisdom Protectors, the five classes of Maning, etc., the forty-five Great Protectors, the Glorious Goddess Palden Lhamo, with her retinue and one thousand and eight emanations, all appearing vividly like a dense mass of clouds, contemplate in this way. Moreover, according to the Hinayana tradition, one takes refuge from now until the end of one's life, but here, according to the Mahayana tradition, one takes refuge until one attains Buddhahood. According to the Hinayana tradition, one takes refuge alone, but here, according to the Mahayana tradition, I and all sentient beings take refuge. According to the Hinayana tradition, one takes refuge out of fear of the dangers of samsara in order to be saved from them, but here it is the fear of samsara and one's own desire for peace and the Hinayana.
