In the appearance, I asked, "Is there water here?" They replied, "I have not even heard the sound of water for twelve years, let alone seen it." Although he was born in the preta realm for only twelve years, it felt like three hundred and sixty human years. On a road where the venerable Maudgalyayana was passing, many preta children were sitting there in great pain and misery. They said, "Venerable one, our mother has gone to find food and has not returned. Please tell her to come back quickly!" So, Maudgalyayana's son went and met the preta mother and conveyed the children's message. The preta mother said, "Venerable one, I am not deliberately delaying, but I have not found food or drink for five hundred years. A monk said that if he spat out some phlegm, the pretas would be able to get it. Many of us fought over it, and although I got it, it was all dirtied by others, so I couldn't eat it." It is said that when he squeezed out the little bit of moisture left in the wine dregs, a blue mark appeared on the back of Sanmo's hand. Therefore, being born into the preta realm is the result of actions of attachment and stinginess, and doing medium-level evil deeds. The *Smṛtyupasthāna Sūtra* says, "Those who are very jealous and stingy, do not fear strife, do not give offerings, and do not keep the precepts, will be reborn as pretas and suffer from hunger and thirst." The sutra says this. In more detail, the *Smṛtyupasthāna Sūtra* says that there are thirty-six kinds of pretas, and they have thirty-six different kinds of suffering. Furthermore, the *Vajra Lines* says, "Animals are foolish." Its commentary, explained by the Great Compassionate One himself, says, "Likewise, animals are very foolish and full of ignorance." If we explain the meaning of this statement in detail, the *Dran Nye* says, "Animals eat each other." The scholar friend says, "Animals hate and kill each other, without freedom, and are always tormented by suffering, almost like hell." The *Friendly Letter* says, "Even in the animal realm, there are various sufferings such as killing, imprisonment, and beatings. For those who abandon tranquility and virtue, the suffering of eating each other is unbearable. Some die for pearls, wool, bones, meat, and skin. Others are forced to use sharp weapons, iron tools, and hooks to beat and drive them."

Jia Yan Treasure (རྒྱན་རིན་པོ་ཆེས) said: The animal realm is also briefly divided into four types: Above the Yoke-holding Mountain, there are no sun and moon; The animals dwelling in the continents are more numerous than the dust of the summer sun; They cannot see their own forms, and their flesh and blood are eaten by each other. ཟ (seed syllable) There is also the suffering of falling into cliffs and waterfalls; The second type dwells in the outer ocean, as numerous as bees in wine dregs; The big ones eat the small ones, all devour each other, one kills another, there is the suffering of executioners; The third is without refuge.

The suffering is unimaginable. Among them, the least suffering is that of animals such as horses, cattle, yaks, sheep, and goats, who are all beings and possessions. They are born as animals because they give a little charity but do not keep the precepts. Even they have no fixed lifespan, and their lives are short. They cannot escape the suffering of being used, killed, and cut. Because of the deterioration of moral conduct, they are born as serpent beings among animals and as animal serpents. Their suffering is the fear of the king's punishment, the fear of hailstorms, and the fear of Garuda, etc. There is immeasurable suffering. Their lifespan is long, and some can even live through an intermediate kalpa. It is said. Guru Padmasambhava said: Again, these kinds of animals are ignorant and foolish. They do not understand what is said. They do not hear the sound of the Three Jewels. Even if they are plowing, shearing, or old and tired, they are loaded with unbearable burdens. Their buttocks are dirty, their bones are dirty, and they are beaten. Their waists are about to break, their buttocks are crooked, they collapse exhausted, and they are beaten even when they want to lie down and rest. Again, there is one kind that, even without a slight illness, is tied up completely. They are ridden on, stabbed in the heart with a knife, and their four legs wobble. Their mouths mutter, their eyes roll back, they are terrified and frightened, and they are in great pain, but they can do nothing. They are born in pain and die in pain. Also, wild animals are chased by many people and dogs in places without mountains or valleys. Their flesh is torn, their fur is shed, they are terrified and frightened, and even if they run for their lives, they are killed. Some plow from youth until old age. They give wool and milk, and they are raised with oil and care as if they were precious family members. In return, they are sold when they are old. Even if they develop a sense of home and run away, they are caught. Or because they are old, people say they are not easy to eat, and even their own mothers are killed. Then, the animals that live in the water, in the mountain ponds and the outer oceans, the big ones eat all the small ones, and all the small ones gather together to attack the big ones. They are foolish, they do not know day from night, they cannot speak, and they do not understand reason. Again, they wander in endless suffering. It is said. Therefore, the cause of being born as an animal is mostly ignorance, and the accumulation of minor non-virtues. In the Sutra on Mindfulness, it says: Like animals, etc., evil speech, and actions done with distraction in the three times, and abandoning one's race and angering animals, speaking badly of animals, etc., these.
