大悲尊者亲自宣说：“饿鬼因饥渴而极度痛苦。”如果详细解释这句话的含义：在《念住经》中说：“饿鬼因饥渴而衰弱。”在《安立世间经》中说：“在阎罗王的世间界中，也因饥渴而极度折磨。”在《亲友书》中说：“饿鬼也因欲望所困，产生无法忍受的持续痛苦，饥渴、寒冷、炎热和恐惧所产生的痛苦极其难以忍受，应当避免。饿鬼们在夏季，月亮是热的，冬季太阳也寒冷，树木没有果实，仅仅是看到它们，河流也会干涸。有些饿鬼的嘴只有针眼那么大，肚子却像须弥山一样大，因饥饿而困扰。即使是微小的、不干净的脓血，也没有寻找的力量和能力。还有些饿鬼口中燃烧着火焰，寻找带着火焰的燃烧的沙子作为食物。有些下等种姓的饿鬼，脓和粪便以及血液等不净之物也找不到，互相像燃烧的树桩一样，从喉咙里寻找成熟的脓液。无间断地遭受痛苦，因造恶业的束缚，有些被坚固束缚的众生，五千年甚至几万年也不会死去。”经中说：“大国王如果转生为饿鬼，这种痛苦在数百年、数千年里，总是因饥渴而内心痛苦，连食物和饮料的声音也听不到，更不用说看到了，就这样遭受痛苦。”邬金仁波切说：“如果归纳饿鬼，也有两种：在世间游荡的饿鬼和住在饿鬼界的饿鬼。在世间游荡的饿鬼，有些人在夜晚能看到它们，它们不由自主地伤害人类，并且有驱魔者的保护和压制所带来的痛苦。它们用后背支撑着鼻子，像打猎一样殴打，寻找庇护所，向人类索要食物和衣服，有厉鬼和凶猛鬼怪带来的痛苦。住在饿鬼界的饿鬼，在地下五百由旬之外，有一个叫做饿鬼宽敞房屋的地方，有三千由旬。

The Great Compassionate One himself declared, "Pretas suffer greatly from hunger and thirst." If we explain the meaning of this statement in detail: In the Sutra on Mindfulness, it says, "Pretas are weakened by hunger and thirst." In the Establishment of the World Sutra, it says, "In the realm of Yama, they are also tormented by thirst and hunger." In the Letter to a Friend, it says, "Pretas are also afflicted by desire, causing unbearable continuous suffering. The suffering caused by hunger, thirst, cold, heat, and fear is extremely unbearable and should be avoided. For pretas, in the summer, the moon is hot, and in the winter, the sun is cold. Trees bear no fruit, and merely by looking at them, rivers dry up. Some have mouths as small as the eye of a needle, but stomachs as large as Mount Sumeru, and are troubled by hunger. Even a tiny bit of unclean pus and blood cannot be found, and they lack the strength and ability to search for it. Some have flames blazing from their mouths, seeking burning sand with flames as food. Some of the lower castes cannot even find pus, feces, or blood, and they seek ripe pus from their throats, resembling burning tree stumps. They suffer continuously without interruption, and some beings bound by the ropes of karma from committing evil deeds are so firmly bound that they do not die for five thousand or even tens of thousands of years." The sutra says, "If a great king is reborn as a preta, this suffering will cause him to be mentally distressed by hunger and thirst for hundreds or thousands of years. He will not even hear the sound of food and drink, let alone see it, and will suffer in this way." Orgyen Rinpoche said, "If we categorize pretas, there are two types: pretas who wander in the world and pretas who dwell in the realm of pretas. Pretas who wander in the world are seen by some people at night. They involuntarily harm humans and suffer from the protection and suppression of exorcists. They support their noses with their backs, beat them like hunting, seek refuge, and ask humans for food and clothing. They suffer from fierce ghosts and demons. Pretas who dwell in the realm of pretas are located five hundred yojanas below the earth, in a place called the Spacious House of Pretas, which is three thousand yojanas in size.
