There are six hundred. The outer obscurations of pretas are: seeing food as flames, torches, and red fire; seeing drinks as pus, blood, impurity, and boiling water; and seeing these guarded by those who carry sticks. There are no guards for the ocean, but it is seen guarded by those who carry weapons. There is no movement in the mountains, but they are seen moving, running, and chasing from behind. The inner obscurations of pretas are: a head the size of a large pot, a mouth the size of a needle's eye, a neck like a horse's tail, a belly the size of a country, and limbs the size of needles that cannot support them. First, they cannot find food or drink by searching. Even if they find it, it doesn't enter their mouths. Even if it enters, it doesn't fit through their necks. Even if it fits, their bellies, the size of a country, cannot be filled. The intermediate obscurations of pretas are: unbearable suffering from extreme hunger and thirst. Even if they find impure things like snot and phlegm, they are snatched away by others and cannot be used. Even the name of water is not heard, and they go to drink mirages, thinking they are water because of their thirst. The dry skeleton without flesh or skin is: the shadow of the sun appears ominous, and in the evening, they feel the earth is full. The specific karmic obscurations of pretas are: moving to search for food and drink causes fire to burn in their mouths. After eating, it turns into boiling bile, burning their bellies, and sparks of fire fly from their bodies. The common karmic obscurations of pretas are: being surrounded by abundant food and drink, but having no right to use it, suffering from hunger and thirst, and guarding it in turn, fearing that others will take it. Those called "preta-born from excrement" are: their waists submerged in the midst of enjoyment, and they are seen guarded by those who carry weapons. Those called "preta-flame wheel" are: everything they eat and drink turns into flames, and their bones shake and burn with fire. These are the sufferings of sentient beings in the preta realm. Furthermore, Guru Padmasambhava himself said: The body of a preta is the size of a large house, the head is the size of a clay pot, the throat is the size of a hair, they cannot find food for eons and suffer, they run everywhere from hunger and thirst, even if they find food after a hundred leagues, it doesn't enter their necks, and even if a little enters, it turns into bile and burns from their bellies, which is even more painful. Also, hearing the smell and sound of food and water, they go to many places.

Oh, even searching day and night, month after month, they cannot find it. Their bodies are extremely exhausted, they suffer terribly, and yet they cannot die in between, and so on. And there is one type that is extremely weakened by hunger and thirst, wandering in all directions. They see food from afar, but they are exhausted from hunger, thirst, and fatigue. They are guarded by those who wield flames and weapons, and they cannot obtain it. Their bodies lose nourishment, and they faint and fall. And there is another type that sees water, but even though they cannot reach it, they struggle to get there. When they arrive, it has turned into pus and blood. And there is another type that hears the sound of something seeping underground, and they scratch with their hands. Even though their fingertips reach the bone, they cannot find it, and it becomes less and less. Their bellies are dry, and flames blaze from their mouths. They suffer terribly, but they cannot die, and they remain for many years. And so on, it is said. Similarly, King Songtsen Gampo said that there are four or six types of pretas (hungry ghosts): Those with outer obscurations are afflicted by hunger and thirst, and they see all food and drink as pus and blood, and vomit. Moreover, they are guarded by those who wield clubs, and they cannot eat freely. Those with inner obscurations have heads like inverted cones, mouths as small as the eye of a needle that cannot enter, throats as thin as a hair that cannot hold anything, bellies as large as a country that cannot be filled, and limbs as thin as twigs that cannot support them. Those with obscurations upon obscurations are extremely hungry and thirsty. The unclean food, snot, phlegm, and so on that they find are snatched away by others. When they are thirsty, they cannot even hear the name of water. The wind is dry, and their skeletons are fleshless and withered. When the shadow of the setting sun appears, the night fills the earth. Those with threshold obscurations are pretas whose mouths blaze with fire. Whatever food they eat burns up. Their bellies become boiling bile that scorches them. Furthermore, there is a type called preta children. Even if they are submerged up to their knees in food, they are guarded by armed men, and they cannot eat freely. The pretas that wander in the sky have no autonomy. They suffer from hunger and thirst, and they harm people. The lifespan of a preta is five hundred years, with one day for a preta being equivalent to one month for a human. It is said. The Abhidharmakosha also says: Therefore, the lifespan of pretas is five hundred months and days, according to human reckoning. Furthermore, when the noble Groma Zhenkyé went to the seashore, he saw a black man.
