Better than giving alms for a hundred years with a mind of desire, is to keep the precepts for one day; that is more excellent. Among the eight kinds of Pratimoksha vows, the vow to be kept by householders is the eight-fold Upavasa vow, so it must be kept. The benefit of that is: Indra said: On the eighth day of the waxing moon, and in the month of miracles, if you keep the eight-fold Upavasa vow, then you will become like me. To that, the Blessed One taught: कौशिका (Sanskrit Devanagari: कौशिका, Sanskrit Romanization: kauśika, Literal meaning: कौशिका) Kausika, do not say that! On the eighth day of the waxing moon, and in the month of miracles, if you keep the eight-fold Upavasa vow, then you will become like me. And in the Sutra of Abiding, the benefits of the eight-fold Upavasa vow are extensively taught, and if summarized, it can be said: It may be possible to count the number of water jars in the great ocean, but it is not possible to measure the merit of one Upavasa vow. Of two people, one gives alms for as long as they live, and one keeps the Upavasa vow for as long as they live, the two have equal merit. Better than filling the entire world with Arhats and serving them for as long as they live with various jewels and all kinds of things, is the merit of doing one Upavasa vow, which is a hundred thousand times greater, and one Upavasa vow is said to be born as a god from the Four Great Kings to the Other-Controlled Emanation. It is also said that keeping the Upavasa vow in this way will lead to meeting the victorious Maitreya in the future. In the Maitreya Prophecy Sutra, it is said: The fourteenth and fifteenth days, as well as the eighth day of the half-moon, and in the month of miracles, the eight branches are well and equally established, and if the Upavasa vow is practiced, then it is more excellent than my teachings, and this meaning will be well proclaimed. Although it is permissible to eat in the morning for the eight-fold Upavasa vow, in the Sutra of Pure Food it is said: Thus, if one can manage to eat one meal a day, then the accumulation of merit will increase by sixty thousand days. In particular, the teachings of the emanation king Songtsen Gampo (reigned approximately 617-650 AD) and Padmasambhava, etc., are in agreement that on the eighth day, one should offer to the Medicine Buddha, and on the fifteenth, one should offer to...

Immeasurable Light. On the full moon day, Shakyamuni Buddha descends, so if one protects a seat on that day, it is said that the merit will increase a hundred thousand times. In particular, in the Sutra 'Establishment of the World,' it says: the eighth day is when the retinues of the Four Great Kings come; the fourteenth is when the sons of the Four Great Kings come; the fifteenth is when the Four Great Kings themselves come and write down whatever good or bad deeds people have done, and hand it over to the King of Death; if good deeds are done, the gods will be pleased and report to Indra, and the gods will also protect. Therefore, it is very important to do whatever one can to protect a seat on those days. The waning moon is also the same: the twenty-third is the eighth day of the waning moon; the twenty-ninth is the fourteenth of the waning moon; the full moon is the fifteenth of the waning moon, so the benefits are the same as the waxing moon. In particular, there are four great festivals: the New Year, from the first to the fifteenth of the Great Miracle Month (the first month of the Tibetan calendar), is the time when the Buddha showed great miracles; the Water Head Month, now known as the Ram Month, the fourth day is the time when the Wheel of Dharma was first turned; the Tha Kar Month, now known as the Yungs Rko Month, the fifteenth is the time when the gods promised to descend, the twenty-second is the time when the gods descended from the heavens, and on those days, the merit increases by a million times. The Saga Month, now known as the Bird Call Month, the fifteenth is the time when the three events coincide, and the merit increases by three million times. During a lunar eclipse, the merit increases by a hundred million times; during a solar eclipse, the merit increases by a trillion times. Therefore, during those times, even if one does bad deeds, the sins become powerful; if one does good deeds, the benefits also increase greatly. Because it is said in the stainless sutras, it is essential to protect a seat and do whatever good deeds one can. In the Sutra 'Mindfulness,' the benefits of abstaining from killing are explained in detail, and now I will briefly summarize them: if one abstains from killing, it becomes a gift of fearlessness; one will be praised in this life; one's complexion and senses will become clear, and one will live long; one will be protected by the gods; the gods will follow and protect one like a shadow; after death, one will be reborn in the heavens; the result of that is that whatever wish one makes, whether it is the wish to be a universal monarch, or Indra, or Brahma, or a Shravaka or Pratyekabuddha, or even a Buddha, a Bhagavan, will be fulfilled. Therefore, completely abstaining from killing is the best; abstaining from killing according to one's ability is moderate; at least one should
