Through giving ignorance, one gains wisdom; through diligence in practice, one becomes wise. Through giving medicine and fearlessness, one will be born without illness and with ease. Through giving beds and bedding, that person will be happy and wealthy. If one gives milk and dairy products, endowed with merit, the giver will be powerful, with a beautiful face and long life. Thus it is said. Also, in the Sutra Pitaka, from the 'Differentiation,' the thirteen benefits of giving drinks are spoken of, briefly stated: one's faculties are complete, one's forehead is clear like a smile, one is endowed with qualities, one's mind is gentle, one does not feel thirsty, when thirsty water appears, one is not born in the preta realm, one's enjoyment is vast, one is born in the heavens, and one quickly attains nirvana. Giving drinks means offering tea to the pure field of the Sangha, or giving tea porridge, milk, yogurt, etc., to the poor. In the 'Sutra of the Perfection of Giving,' it is said: If one gives food, one gains life and color, strength and happiness, all five increase, this is the giving of the wise. Giving food brings joy, long life, strength, and happiness, these qualities of happiness and stability, one gains unobstructed courage. Rich and wealthy, with splendor, that person is intelligent and virtuous, endowed with merit and virtuous, giving food brings such results. Thus it is said. Giving water brings wisdom, one is always blazing and radiant, one is not born in the painful realm of pretas, and there are no calamities of thirst. Thus it is said. Giving clothes is extremely glorious, one is always of noble lineage and good appearance, this person knows shame and has conscience, that person has fame and wealth. Thus it is said. Therefore, if one gives to the excellent Sangha, the benefit is even more excellent. The Bhagavan said: Whoever gives excellent food to the renunciates and the Sangha, they dwell in the forest of samsara, and obtain food with color, taste, and so on. Whoever gives vast drinks to the renunciates and the Sangha, they dwell in the forest of samsara, and obtain various drinks with color and taste. Thus it is said. The benefits of giving servants to pure fields and other places, the 'Earth Sutra' says: Whether male or female, virtuous people, give to those who uphold morality.

Wherever one is born, how like a human king, the gods will be supreme, and one will become a most excellent king. Thus it is said. The benefit of giving land to a pure field is stated in the Sutra of the Land: "Whoever takes land, and whoever makes a treasure of land, since both are beneficial, will surely go to the heavens. There is no giving equal to land, no treasure equal to giving, and no merit equal to truth." And: "Whoever gives seeds with grain stalks, with plowing as a sign, for hundreds of thousands of kalpas, their birth will not diminish. Especially to those who possess discipline, whoever gives a field of grain, the fruit of that giving of land will be inexhaustible." Whoever gives land adorned with rice, sugarcane groves, and green barley sprouts, that supreme god will greatly increase in happiness. Thus it is said, so even if kings and officials give a large monastery and offering place, or a small hermitage house and just one field, it is said that the benefit is so great. Furthermore, in the Sutra Showing the Benefits of Giving: "If one gives a vehicle, the fully ripened result will be the attainment of the four miraculous legs. If one gives silk, the fully ripened result will be, among gods and humans, the attainment of being bound by liberating silk." Thus it is said. Also, the benefit of giving precious things is stated in the Sutra of the Perfection of Giving: "By giving jewels and pearls, wherever one is born, in those places of birth, a rain of jewels will fall." Thus it is said. Also, the benefit of giving horses and so forth is stated in that same sutra: "By giving a vehicle, the great sage, from Buddha-field to Buddha-field, with the strength of a wise bird, will travel in the sky by means of miracles." Thus it is said. Thus, if one gives, even in death there is no need for suffering, as stated in the Realization of the Power of Merit: "Whoever abandons stinginess and gives at the right time, even in death they do not die, like a traveler with good provisions." Thus it is said. And in the Sutra of the Three Dharmas it is also said: "If one gives at the right time, even in death they do not die, like a traveler with good provisions." Thus it is said. If one shows respect to parents and provides them with good food and clothing, also loving...

It is said that the benefit of giving is very great. In the Sutra of Parents, it is said that parents are Brahma, and similarly, the first is the teacher. A son should give everything, being both human and divine. Therefore, parents are worthy of reverence, and one should wipe, bathe, massage their feet, or offer food, drink, clothing, bedding, and cushions to them. The wise should respect their parents. Those who respect their parents will not be condemned by the world, and will ascend to the heavens after death. Thus it is said in the sutra. Regarding the differences in fields of merit, the Abhidharmakosha says that even if they are not noble beings, giving to parents, the sick, those who preach the Dharma, and the last existence Bodhisattva, the merit is immeasurable. Thus it is said in the sutra. Therefore, in order to extensively explain the importance of giving, the Madhyamakavatara says: All beings desire happiness, and people's happiness cannot be separated from enjoyment, and enjoyment comes from giving. Therefore, the Buddha first proclaimed the principle of giving.
