As one goes, so it is that by doing good deeds, sentient beings go to a place of happiness. And from the "Moon Lamp Sutra": Whatever kind of action is done, one will obtain a result of that kind. And the Blessed One said: The actions done by Devadatta do not ripen in the earth, water, and so on, but ripen in his own aggregates, elements, and sense bases; they do not ripen in anyone else. Thus it was said. Next, as for experiencing the results of actions, the Abhidharmasamuccaya says: How does one experience the results of actions? It is because one experiences the fully ripened results of one's own actions, and thus experiences the respective results of good and bad actions. Thus it says. And in the "Advice to the King Sutra": Urged on by time, I must go; enjoyments, friends, and relatives do not follow. Wherever that person is born, actions follow like a shadow. Thus it says. If we summarize the meaning explained in detail in the "Courageous Intelligence Sutra": Those who do not respect their parents, whose minds are difficult to satisfy, who do not abandon sins, who steal wealth, and who do not repay debts will have bad fortune in the future and be born as slaves. Listening to the Dharma with faith, not slandering any of the Great or Small Vehicle teachings, and engaging in teaching and listening; abandoning the four faults of speech and not making accusations; protecting sinful sentient beings with compassion and encouraging them to abandon evil and do good; and not speaking of the faults of others—the result of these is good fortune, a fragrant scent, freedom from harm, extremely tamed body and mind, a beautiful appearance, and being praised by many people. One also takes refuge in the Three Jewels and encourages others to do so; commissioning the construction of large and beautiful Buddha images; respecting the Khenpo and Acharya; being agreeable and harmonious in speech and mind; cultivating loving-kindness towards all sentient beings; and practicing the sutras, reciting, transmitting, explaining, and meditating—if one possesses these five, then in all lifetimes one will not be separated from the Three Jewels, one will meet the Buddhas, hear the Dharma, and ultimately attain enlightenment, and so on. Thus it was said. As for small actions ripening into great results, the Blessed One said: Do not think that small sins will not harm you;

Even small tigers, look, can burn a mountain of grass; even small virtues, do not think they are useless; look, by accumulating drops of water, they become a great ocean; and so on. From the Compendium of Special Topics: Even doing small evils will cause great misfortune and great collapse in the next life, like poison entering the stomach; even doing small merits will lead to happiness in the next life, and will also accomplish great things, like abundant grains; and so on. Even very small evils, do not despise them, thinking they are harmless; by accumulating drops of water, a large vessel will gradually be filled; and so on. Having done small evils, do not think that there will be no consequences; just as drops of water fall, a large vessel will be filled; even slightly accumulated evils will completely fill a child (with evil); having done small virtues, do not think that there will be no consequences; just as drops of water flow, a large pot will be filled; even slightly accumulated virtues will completely fill the teachings (with good); thus it is said. Therefore, even small evils should be avoided, and doing small virtues is also important. Next is the teaching on the infallibility of karmic results: From the Mindfulness Sutra: Fire may become cold, wind may be caught by ropes, the sun and moon may fall to the ground, but the ripening of karma will not deceive (people). And so on. From the Hundred Deeds Sutra: The deeds of sentient beings, even after a hundred eons, will not be wasted; once they gather and the time arrives, they will ripen into fruit. And so on. From the Glorious Subāhu's Question Sutra: Good and non-good, previously done, will not be wasted; teachings to the wise will not be wasted; the good words of the noble Sangha will not be wasted; having done, there is doing, never will it be wasted. And so on. From the Compendium of Special Topics: Wherever one may dwell, there is no place where one cannot be reached by karma; that place does not exist anywhere, not in the sky, not on the ocean, not even if one enters among the mountains. And so on. From the Nirvana Sutra: Whether one goes into the realm of space, the ocean, or into mountains and rocks, wherever one goes, one cannot escape the karma one has created. Thus it is said. Next is the teaching on what should be given first: Holy Subāhu said: Karma
