Thus it is said. Some believe that cause and effect of karma are not true, which is a kind of nihilistic view of the materialists. It leads oneself and others to the Avici Hell. In the Sutra of Ten Dharmas spoken by Maitreya, it says: Whoever thinks that there is no cause and effect of karma, that is a nihilistic view of the materialists. Immediately after death, one is born in the Avici Hell. It destroys oneself and also ruins others. In the Padma Stacked Sutra, it says: Saying that karma has no good or bad ripening, that is a false dharma. Thus it is said. So, what is karma? It is of two kinds: karma of intention and karma after intention. In the Abhidharma-samuccaya, it says: What is karma? It is karma of intention and karma after intention. Thus it is said. In the Abhidharma-kosa, it also says: Karma is intention and what is done by it. Thus it is said. In the Sutra, it says: The supreme sage proclaimed that all karmas are intention and after intention. Thus it is said. What are those two like? Thinking in the mind is the karma of intention, and those that are generated and done by the mind are the karma after intention. In the Abhidharma-kosa, it says: Intention is the karma of the mind, and what it generates are the karmas of body and speech. Thus it is said. Karma also has divisions, individual characteristics, what is to be possessed, enjoying the share, maturing from small to large, and not being wasted, the first of these six. Generally speaking, the divisions are: virtuous karma, non-virtuous karma, and unwavering karma, these three include cause and effect. In detail, although there are many, non-meritorious deeds are included in the ten non-virtuous deeds: from the aspect of body, there are three: killing, stealing, and sexual misconduct. From the aspect of speech, there are four: lying, slander, harsh words, and idle talk. From the aspect of mind, there are three: covetousness, malice, and wrong views. The karma of merit is the ten virtuous deeds: abandoning the ten non-virtuous deeds is the ten virtuous deeds. Unwavering karma is meditating on the samadhi of absorption: in short, it is meditating on special calm abiding without higher vision. That is to say, non-virtuous karma leads to falling into the lower realms, virtuous karma leads to rebirth in the higher realms, and unwavering karma leads to rebirth as gods in the higher realms. In the Sutra Requested by Arya Deva, it says: Seeds that are hot, the fruits that are born are also hot. Seeds that are sweet, the fruits that are born are also sweet. By that analogy, the ripening of sins is bitter, and the fruits of white deeds are also sweet.

Having known by the wise, always with body, speech, and mind, do not commit the three kinds of sins, and even when others do, the wise should not rejoice in it. With body, speech, and mind, always do the three white deeds, whoever practices virtuous deeds, one should also rejoice in others. Thus spoke the Bhagavan: Seeing the ripening of karma is extremely happy and blissful, going to a good rebirth is also happy, doing evil causes suffering here and suffering in the future, not seeing the ripening of karma is extremely painful, going to a bad rebirth is also painful in the future. Thus spoke the Bhagavan: O monks, therefore, the ripening of purely black karma is purely black, the ripening of purely white karma is purely white, mixed karma is mixed, therefore, O monks, abandon purely black karma and mixed karma, strive for purely white karma, O monks, you should train in this way. Thus it is said. Such karma is also divided into four categories, totaling ten types: definite and indefinite, done and accumulated and not accumulated, lifespan complete and incomplete, happiness and suffering, generosity large and small, body and mind happiness and suffering, lifespan exhausted and unexhausted, the form of bad rebirth, intention, throwing and completing. First, in the Sutra of Karma Differentiation, it says: What is the karma that will definitely be born? That is, after doing any virtuous deed, make a vow like this: May I be born like that! Thus, definitely dedicating the merit, and committing the five heinous crimes, this is the karma that will definitely be born. Thus it is said. The indefinite is said in the same Sutra: What is the karma of uncertain rebirth? That is, after doing any virtuous deed, not dedicating it to anything at all, this karma is the karma of uncertain rebirth. What is the maturation of other karma? That is, here the karma of good and non-virtue matures elsewhere, like the daughter of a merchant's friend. This karma matures elsewhere. Thus it is said. Second, in the Karma Differentiation, it says: What is the karma that is done but not accumulated? That is, after doing any karma, feeling regret, scolding, confessing, revealing, abandoning.
