Friends! How many parents, siblings, wives, husbands, and children have died? How many have died! It's amazing that I haven't died yet! Even though I haven't died, it's a great fault that I haven't practiced the Dharma to gain assurance in the next life! In general, all things, both the container and its contents, are impermanent, which is surprising and causes sadness in my heart. When the throat is uncomfortable, meditate on it as bodhicitta, so it is said. Similarly, King Songtsen Gampo also said: From the greatest virtuous friend to the best local king, from the richest wheel-turning king to the poorest beggar, from the smallest newborn baby to the oldest sixty-year-old, there is no one who is not under the power of the Lord of Death. It is also said: No one has the power to guarantee that they will not die for a single day, wasting their lives on meaningless things, and unknowingly, the body will soon decay, and it is unknown when this rotten and impure corpse will be abandoned to become food for worms, birds, dogs, beasts, and wolves. Similarly, in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara, it says: This body, which is nourished by food and clothing obtained through much hardship, will not accompany you, but will be eaten by birds and dogs, or burned by blazing fire, or rot in water, or be buried in the ground. Therefore, it is important to always remember, and not to forget death three times a day, and from today until tomorrow, to single-mindedly meditate on death. So, what are the benefits of meditating on death? The Bhagavan said: If you meditate on impermanence a lot, it is the same as making offerings to all the Buddhas; if you meditate on impermanence a lot, it is the same as receiving the breath of all the Buddhas; if you meditate on impermanence a lot, it is the same as receiving the prophecy of all the Buddhas; if you meditate on impermanence a lot, it is the same as receiving the blessings of all the Buddhas. For example, among all footprints, the elephant's footprint is the best. Similarly, among all the Buddhist meditative consciousnesses, only the consciousness of meditating on impermanence is the best. Also, in the Mahaparinirvana Sutra, it says that among all the cultivated fields, the autumn harvest is the best; among all the footprints, the footprint of the ox is the best; among all the consciousnesses, the consciousness of impermanence and death is the best, because these can eliminate the desires, ignorance, and pride of the three realms.

O! Thus spoke, and the previous accomplished vidyādharas were also frightened by death, abandoning this life, reducing expenses on food, clothing, and talk. It seems that only by practicing with one-pointedness can one achieve accomplishment. Ordinary people do not remember the Dharma, those who enjoy pleasures are bound by stinginess, those in power commit great sins, bad people commit various kinds of uninterrupted sins, and those who enter the Dharma gate cannot reach the end. All of these are faults of not remembering death. Therefore, now it is very important for you to contemplate death and impermanence with one-pointedness! Now it is very important to generate understanding of impermanence and to never forget it! This is the third Dharma teaching. Then, explaining the cause and effect of karma: In the Vajra verse it says: If you strive in virtuous Dharma, it is the cause of Buddhahood; whatever sins you commit, you will wander in the six realms accordingly. And, in its auto-commentary spoken by Great Compassionate Avalokiteśvara: If you diligently strive in various virtuous Dharmas, then it is the cause of Buddhahood. Whatever sins you commit, you will wander in the six realms accordingly, falling into ignorance as animals, stinginess as hungry ghosts, and so on. Explaining the meaning of what was said in detail: The death and impermanence mentioned above does not matter even if it ends the lifespan, if you think you will be reborn, where will you be born after death, karma is the greatest power. In the Karma Hundredfold it says: Karmas are also various, therefore the destinations of beings are also various. And, in the Compassionate White Lotus Sutra it also says: The world is created by karma, transformed by karma. Sentient beings are created by karma, arising from the cause of karma, distinguished by karma. Thus it is said. The Abhidharma-kośa also says: The world is various, born from karma. In the Extensive Collection it says: The nature of beings is the cause of karma, this is the inconceivable place spoken by all Buddhas. Just like various different seeds, sowing various different fruits. Similarly, due to the difference of karma, sentient beings and land will arise. The forms of land are very many, it is the karma accumulated by sentient beings. Thus it is said. In the Mindfulness Sutra it says: Thus bound by karma, the world revolves like a wheel. It does not go according to desire, but goes for the sake of need. Thus it is said. Padmasambhava said: Cause and effect are not deceiving, it is a vow that is difficult to abandon.
