And become a lord, and become a dwelling, protector, refuge, companion, and teacher. Thus it is said. From the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: This unreliable Lord of Death does not stay whether one has done or not done. Whether sick or not sick, all should not trust in sudden life. Since one must abandon everything and die, I, not knowing this, for the sake of friends and non-friends, have committed various kinds of sins. Non-friends will also disappear, and friends will also disappear. I will also disappear, and likewise everything will disappear. Thus it is said. When I am lying in bed, even though surrounded by all my relatives and friends, the feeling of the cutting off of life will be experienced by myself alone. When seized by the messengers of Yama, what good are relatives, what good are friends? At that time, if there is a refuge, it is merit, but I have not relied on it. Thus it is said. Bījagatamitra Ananta, advising the king, said: However rich you may be, when you depart and go to another world, like being conquered by an enemy in a desolate plain, alone, without a son, without a queen, without clothes, without food, without a kingdom, without a bed. Even if there are countless powers and armies, they cannot be seen, there is no dwelling. Not even one person will follow after death, but they will not come. In short, even your name will not exist at that time, what need is there to mention anything else? Thus it is said. Then, meditating on the exhaustion of life: From the Compendium: For example, when a thread is stretched out, wherever the eye is placed, it touches the depth of the eye, so is the life of people. For example, those who are certainly killed, whatever step they take, they approach the place of being killed, so is the life of people. Like a violently flowing river, which cannot be reversed, so the life of people goes, it will not be reversed again. Thus it is said. For example, just as a shepherd with a stick drives the cattle to their dwelling, so old age and death lead people to the presence of the Lord of Death. Thus it is said. From the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: Without stopping day and night, this life is constantly being depleted. Since there is no addition, why should I not fear death? Thus it is said. From the Jātaka: From the first night of entering the womb, from then on, these worlds have embarked on the path, without deviating to another path.
