Where to pursue when my greatness is exhausted? Meditate thinking of the time of death! Thus it is said! Summer, winter, autumn, spring, the seasons are impermanent! Thus it is said! The impermanence of sentient beings, the inner essence, from the "Extensive Play Sutra": The three realms are impermanent, like autumn clouds; the birth and death of beings are like watching a dance; the life of a person is like lightning in the sky; it flows swiftly like water flowing down a steep slope! Thus it is said! From the mouth of the Bhagavan (bhagavan, Sanskrit, Bhagavan, bhagavat, possessing fortune): Accumulation will eventually be exhausted; the high will eventually fall; the end of meeting is separation; the end of living is death! Thus it is said! From the "Sutra of Advice to King Clear Victory": Great King, for example, from the four directions, four mountains that are solid, stable, and tall collapse, grinding grass, trees, and all living beings into powder, making a rumbling sound. In this situation, can one escape by running quickly, or can one stop it with strength, or can one bribe with wealth, or can one stop it with mantras, substances, and medicine? This is not easy! Similarly, all sentient beings will face four great destructions, namely sickness, old age, death, and decay. In this situation, can one escape by running quickly, or can one stop it with strength, or can one bribe with wealth, or can one stop it with mantras, substances, and medicine? This is not easy! Thus it is said! Among these, there are two types: practicing impermanence oneself and relating it to others. Practicing impermanence oneself is: from the "Auspicious Night Goddess Dharani": Who knows if one will die tomorrow? Therefore, act in accordance with today! The Lord of Death and his retinue are not your friends! Thus it is said! From the "Entering the Bodhisattva's Way of Life": Just because one does not die today, it is not reasonable to live in comfort. When I am certainly without existence, I will certainly be eaten by demons. Who can give me certain fearlessness? How can I certainly be liberated now? If I am certainly eaten by demons and without existence, how can my mind certainly be at ease? Thus it is said! This life is like this, all relatives and friends are abandoned, one must go alone. What is the meaning of love and hate? Thus it is said! Thus, when meditating on death, there are also: first, meditating on death; meditating on the characteristics of death; meditating on the exhaustion of life; meditating on separation. First, meditating on death: from the "Sutra on Meditating on Impermanence": Being without illness is impermanent, youth is impermanent, and life is also impermanent.

Enjoying wealth is also not permanent; birth, aging, sickness, and death constantly press upon us. How can delight arise from craving desires? Furthermore, as stated in the Nirvana Sutra: If there is birth, there is death; if there is flourishing, there is decline; youth is also impermanent; the beauty of flourishing is seized by illness; the life of survival is also seized by death; there is no permanent dharma. Furthermore, as stated in the Jataka: Although possessing skill and power, one cannot escape the clutches of aging and death. Furthermore, as stated in the Karma Shataka: One is born to die, possessing the nature of being controlled by others; death seems like something to be done, while living seems like something not to be done. Furthermore, as stated in the Bodhisattva Pitaka: A dewdrop on the tip of a blade of grass, when the sun fully rises, vanishes in an instant; the life of a human is also like that. Just as the branches of a tree, leaves, flowers, fruits, etc., all have the nature of falling, so too is the life of a human. The body is impermanent and unstable, like an empty bubble, a water bubble, like an illusion, like a dance. Just as clouds and lightning are not permanent, in an instant, life also changes like that; one should take essence from what has no essence. Furthermore, as Kamalashila said: The realms of the world are impermanent, like a rainbow that vanishes in an instant; years, months, days, and numbers approach death; children, grandchildren, relatives, and friends, in the end, also vanish like camphor. Furthermore, as the noble Nagarjuna said: If a fire suddenly breaks out on one's head or clothes, one should abandon the act of stopping them and strive to ensure that there is no rebirth; there is no more excellent and important matter than this. Furthermore, as stated in the Story of the Seven Daughters: View the body and life that will be abandoned as a dewdrop on the tip of water and grass. Thus it is said. Second, meditating on the characteristics of death: As stated in the Sutra of Advice to the King: Great King! This world will be abandoned; one will go to the other world; the great being will rise; one will enter the great darkness, the great night; one will fall into the great abyss; one will enter the dense forest; one will go to the great solitude; one will be swallowed by the great ocean; one will be driven by the wind of karma; going to a place where there is no foothold, there is no protector other than the Dharma, no refuge, no army. Great King! The Dharma at that time, at that moment, is the great continent.
