Just as a turtle's neck fits into the yoke hole, it is said that obtaining a human body is extremely difficult. Moreover, the sutra says: Obtaining a human body is as difficult as a sesame seed on the tip of a needle, yet one does not know this without considering the number of sentient beings. Moreover, the "Lamp of Faith" says: It is extremely difficult to obtain this human body! If you scatter beans on the surface of a drum, it is difficult to stick, and one might stick. All the others fall to the ground like ordinary beings. Look at the number of sentient beings for whom obtaining a human body is difficult! In another sutra, the Blessed One said to his younger brother, Gowo: If you point the eye of a needle towards the sky and scatter a handful of mustard seeds, mustard seeds may fall into the eye of the needle; if you turn a wall over and scatter a handful of beans, beans may stick; similarly, it is possible to obtain a human body. In terms of number, it is difficult to obtain: The Blessed One said that the three lower realms are like the dust of the great earth, and being born as a human is like the dust on a fingernail. For example, if there is a huge pile of grain, the root is the number of hells and other lower realms, the waist is the gods and demigods, and the top is the number of human bodies. Thus, even if you gather the army of a great king, it will not be as many as a large anthill, from which you can know how difficult it is to obtain a human body. The reason why it is necessary to take the essence of such a rare human body is explained: The Bodhisattvacharyavatara says: This leisure is extremely difficult to obtain, and it can accomplish the meaning and benefit of life. If you do not achieve benefit now, how can you obtain this perfection later? Therefore, "kshyes-bu" (person) is derived from the sound of Purusha (梵文天城体:पुरुष,梵文罗马音:puruṣa,汉语字面意思:人), meaning strength or ability. Relying on this precious human body, one can obtain the status of gods and humans, and one can obtain the status of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Because one has the ability to obtain complete Buddhahood, it is called a person. Although the wish-fulfilling jewel can produce food, wealth, and enjoyment, it does not have such great power, so the human body is more precious than the wish-fulfilling jewel, so it is called the precious human body. The time to obtain such an opportunity is only this time, and it will not be found again and again, so now you must strive to practice the sacred Dharma. The meaning is: The Letter to a Friend says: Once obtained, one can cross the sea of suffering of samsara.

Indeed, and may the seed of supreme Bodhi, goodness, also be sown. Surpassing even the wish-fulfilling jewel, with virtues even more excellent, who is it that renders this human form fruitless? The Sugata has shown the path, excellently guiding beings, and what is the great power of beings, the attainment of a human being? This path is not attained by gods or nagas, nor by asuras, nor by garudas or vidyadharas, nor by kimnaras or those who crawl on their bellies. Thus it is said, and the gods, at the time of their death, also make aspirations to be born as humans. Thus it is said, and in the Sutra of Entering the Womb it says: Even though one is born as a human, and thus possesses endless suffering, because it is a supreme place, it is difficult to attain in hundreds of thousands of kalpas. When the gods die, the other gods say: May you be born in a happy realm! A happy realm is the realm of humans. Thus it is said. Therefore, this body is superior to the body of a god. However, even if one is born in the Eastern Continent of Superior Body, or the Northern Continent of Unpleasant Sound, or the Western Continent of Enjoyment of Cattle, in these three continents, there is no opportunity to practice the Dharma. In this Southern Jambudvipa, even among humans, it is difficult to be born. The Sutra says: Although there are many sentient beings in the world, it is very rare to be born in Jambudvipa. It is extremely difficult to obtain a pure human body. Thus it is said. Having been born with a rare and greatly beneficial birth, it is necessary to make it meaningful. The Sutra says: At this time when you have obtained a precious human body, you have the power of speech, thought, and control. Wherever others are born, they are distracted by the lack of leisure. At this time when you have the power of speech, thought, and control, will you cut off the root of samsara or increase samsara? To be independent and self-reliant is now. Thus it is said. The Sutra of Abiding in Supreme Intelligence says: Having completely abandoned all eight unfree states, and having obtained the rare and perfect leisure and endowments, it is difficult to obtain the appearance of the Buddhas and their long-lasting presence, and likewise, faith in the teachings. Since it is difficult to obtain a human existence, strive diligently in the teachings of the Victorious Ones. Thus it is said. The Bodhicaryavatara says: Having obtained such leisure and opportunity, if I do not cultivate virtue, there is no greater self-deception than this, and there is no greater ignorance than this. Thus it is said. Nagarjuna says: It is difficult to obtain a human body in Jambudvipa, and at that time it is the cause of falling into the lower realms. Be extremely careful and cut it off. Thus it is said. The Ratnakuta Sutra says: The Buddhas appear in the world once in hundreds of thousands of eons, and it is very difficult to be born as a human being, friend!
