And one will perfect the power of samadhi. If one thinks that the mind is permanent, solid, and indestructible, or if one thinks that the mind is nonexistent, that there is nothing at all, without clinging to these, but looking at one's own unaltered nature, one will not fall into permanence or annihilation. If one deliberately blocks conceptual thoughts and only meditates on non-conceptual wisdom, one will fall into the Hearer vehicle; if one does not block conceptual thoughts, but meditates on whatever arises from one's own nature, with arising and dissolution occurring simultaneously like water and waves, one will eliminate (the fault). If one blocks conceptual thoughts from scattering to external objects and places the inner awareness on the essence of emptiness, one will fall into the Solitary Realizer vehicle; if one does not block the conceptual thoughts of the six external aggregates, but allows them to arise and dissolve on their own, one will eliminate (the fault). If one blocks all the lower philosophical systems and establishes one's own system as inexpressible through scripture and reasoning, and merely places the mind on the certainty of emptiness; or if one again uses scripture and reasoning to establish that all internal and external phenomena are empty, and merely generates a clear certainty of emptiness, and remains in that state, this is clinging to the mere distinction between relative and ultimate truth, and is a dry understanding. Therefore, by cultivating the unaltered, primordially pure self-awareness without clinging to emptiness and the union of the two truths, one will avert (the fault). If one regards oneself as an ordinary being and invites the wisdom deity from outside, and clings to the certainty of requesting blessings, one will fall into external tantra; if one is certain that one's own mind is the Buddha, one will not fall into it. If one clings to the signs of mantras, mudras, and deity yoga, or visualizes the external world and the internal beings as the mandala of the deity, etc., if one is still not free from clinging, that is Maha Yoga; if one knows that all of this is merely a magical display of the mind, like a rainbow appearing in the sky, one will be liberated. If one thinks that the channels, winds, and drops of the body are inherently the mandala of the deity, and still clings to one's own body as something substantial, there will be a place to fall; if one knows that all of this is without inherent existence and unborn, one will be liberated. In short, whatever one clings to, one will be bound by; therefore, the view and practice of the Great Perfection are supreme. If one thinks, "My practice is the pinnacle of vehicles, is uncreated, and transcends thought," one will be bound by the clinging of certainty; as it says in the *Bodhicharyavatara*, "By not thinking, one does not arise; by being free from desire, one is liberated," by practicing in this way, one will cut off all the faults of view and practice. Next are the faults of conduct: If one does not understand the meaning of saying that the five poisons are the five wisdoms, the three poisons are the body, speech, and mind, etc., and places the five poisons on one's own continuum,

If one indulges in undisciplined behavior, that is the view of the black-mouthed demon; if one abandons the five poisons, that is the path of the Shravakas and the lower vehicles, so by looking at the essence of the five poisons, they will arise as wisdom. Even if one realizes the emptiness of mind itself, but thinks that mind is empty like the sky, and there is no benefit or harm from virtue or vice, and therefore does not practice virtue or abandon vice, that is the view of the Hwashang, an extreme view of emptiness; even if one realizes the view is like the sky, one should still be wary of even the smallest sins; one should strive to eliminate whatever evil arises. Also, in dispelling illness, evil spirits, and obstacles: if one looks at the essence of the thought, "The pain of the illness is unbearable," and rests in equanimity, then it is more beneficial and virtuous than meditating in times of ease, and it eliminates more obscurations, so the illness will become easier to bear. Regarding the harm of evil spirits, look at the essence of the thought, "This is the harm of evil spirits," and liberate it into emptiness; because the root of evil spirits is conceptual thought itself, if conceptual thought is liberated in its own place, then the evil spirits will also subside. The obstacles to Samadhi are two: dullness and agitation. It is said that one should praise the way of looking at dullness and lethargy, tighten the body, and meditate with focused awareness; and if agitation is strong, one should relax the body and mind and meditate; but most importantly, whichever arises, dullness or agitation, it is more beneficial to look nakedly at its essence, thereby seeing emptiness more clearly; because without acceptance or rejection, without elimination or placement, the uncorrected state itself is the actual practice. If there is no loving-kindness and compassion, even if one realizes the view, it is the Hinayana. One should cultivate loving-kindness and compassion, and not let it be separated from the essence of emptiness. If one has definitely realized the view, then compassion will spontaneously arise for those sentient beings who have not realized it in this way; therefore, one should also make vast aspirations to benefit sentient beings. Even if one has emptiness and compassion, if one does not practice the deity of Yidam, it is no different from the practice of the Sutras; therefore, one should visualize it arising from emptiness like a rainbow in the sky, and not let it be separated from the essence of emptiness, so that it will transform into the union of generation and completion stages; if one cannot do that, one should gather the generation stage into emptiness and rest in emptiness. Therefore, at the beginning of all virtuous actions, one should generate the mind of Bodhicitta, thinking, "May I attain perfect Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings"; during the main practice, practice the union of Shamatha and Vipashyana, or the union of generation and completion stages, or the union of bliss and emptiness, or the union of clarity and emptiness.
