mthong ba (Seeing), gya nom snang (Splendid Appearance), og min (Akanishta) and the five are called the five abodes of the noble ones; it is not born from shamatha alone, and individual ordinary beings are not born there either, it is only the abode of the noble ones. By blocking the perception of grasping at characteristics in clarity and non-conceptuality, one enters the absorption of non-perception. By blocking all appearances and attainments, and meditating on consciousness like the sky, one reaches infinite consciousness. By meditating that both object and subject are not established, and that nothing is established, one is born in nothingness. By abandoning the coarse perception of nothingness and meditating on the subtle perception that it is not even non-existent, one is born as a god of neither perception nor non-perception. Although these are the ultimate in mere shamatha, they are bound by subtle clinging of the mind, and it is a fault of not seeing the face of vipashyana itself. Saraha said: The original mind is deceived by faults like a child; it especially refutes all beings; the fault of pride cannot represent that itself; the whole world is deluded by meditation. Thus, having meditated on mere shamatha, the greater the shamatha, the greater the skill and qualities of vipashyana; if shamatha is small, the power of vipashyana is small, just as little cloud means little rain, or little firewood means little fire. Therefore, now abandon other virtuous activities of recitation, and try to keep the mind one-pointedly as much as possible. Thus, having requested the object of shamatha and dedicated the merit of meditation to all sentient beings, please repeat after me: May the merit be dedicated to all motherly beings of the six realms. Three times. This is the section on meditating on shamatha, the fifteenth dharma talk. Then, the explanation of vipashyana: Vipashyana is wisdom, and there are two types: common and uncommon. The first is the wisdom that individually examines and investigates all phenomena, both internal and external, which some sutra systems explain as wisdom. With a hundred times the wisdom, a blind person with little learning does not know how to meditate; without that, what should one think about? Therefore, one should strive in listening, because from that cause, by meditating with reflection, vast wisdom arises. Although it is said so, this is teaching the emptiness of wisdom. There are two types: scripture and pith instructions. From the tantric scriptures, one must first establish the view; if that is not established, it is said that it becomes meaningless like an arrow that does not see the target.

I, here, through initially meditating and taking it into experience, the view is naturally realized, as it arises from the instructions of the previous vidyadharas, it is profound. In this, even if one accumulates vast amounts of skillful means and merit, if one does not realize the meaning of wisdom and emptiness, one will not be liberated from samsara. As the Compendium says: "A billion trillion blind people without a guide, do not even know the path, how could they enter the city? Likewise, without wisdom, the five pāramitās are like the blind, without a guide, they cannot touch enlightenment." So it is said. By grasping the accumulation of skillful means and merit with wisdom and emptiness, one attains enlightenment. As it says in the Entering the Middle Way: "Just as a crowd of blind people can easily be led to the place they desire by a single person with eyes, so too, wisdom takes hold of the qualities without eyes and goes to the kingdom of the conquerors." And as the Compendium says: "Wisdom knows the nature of all dharmas, and also truly transcends the three realms." And as the Hundred Verses on Wisdom says: "These seen and unseen qualities, the root of all is wisdom. Therefore, in order to accomplish both of these, one should diligently hold onto wisdom." And as it says, if the light of wisdom does not dispel the darkness, one will not change even if one is endowed with pure morality. For the most part, morality without wisdom, due to the fault of knowledge, becomes defiled with afflictions. If the mind is disturbed by the good fault of wisdom, then the quality of patience will not abide in it. Such a person holds an attitude of dislike towards distinguishing between good and bad, like a king without qualities, merely having a reputation. And as the Compendium says: "Without wisdom, these five pāramitās are like the blind, without a guide, they cannot touch enlightenment. When one is well grasped by wisdom, then one finds the eye and obtains its name." And as it says in the Engaging in Bodhisattva Deeds: "All these limbs, the Able One said, are for the sake of wisdom. Therefore, if you wish to pacify suffering, you should generate wisdom." So it is said. What is called wisdom, worldly wisdom is medicine, grammar, logic, crafts, etc., but in this case, it is not the wisdom of knowing those things. The wisdom of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers, the wisdom of understanding one's own aggregates as impure, suffering, impermanent, and selfless, is also not meant here. The wisdom in this case is that all phenomena are empty.
