The cause of calm abiding relies on discipline, its nature is being free from afflictions and discursive thoughts. The condition relies on the distinction of mind-dwelling, the benefit is suppressing coarse afflictions and suffering. Thus it is said. Here, this is the time to meditate on mere calm abiding, one should try one's best to keep the mind from wandering anywhere. In a state of possessing the essential points of the body, both body and mind should be relaxed, loose, and comfortable. If the mind wanders, do not let it wander, but place it on calm abiding. Thus, when discursive thoughts subside and the mind dwells in its own place, that is calm abiding. Furthermore, there are two types: with faults and without faults. When the mind goes into calm abiding to the point that one does not hear even when called, like falling into a deep sleep, but it is not drowsiness either. At that time, the eyes do not see anything, the mind is not clear, and there is no memory or thought. Even if one stays like that for a long time, one does not know how much time has passed. When one awakens from that samadhi, like waking up from sleep or recovering from fainting, one wonders what happened to me this time, such a feeling arises, that is dull calm abiding. It is okay if such a thing happens for a short while at first, as it is also a sign of the arising of meditation. In the past, it also happened to Je Dolpopa Sherab Gyaltsen (1292-1361) and others. However, one should not think that it is meditation and continue to meditate in that state. If one only meditates on that, it is the cause of being born as an animal. Furthermore, if one places the mind in the center of one's heart and then sits without thinking anything in the mind, no thoughts or memories arise in the mind, and the mind abides. Thus, because there are no thoughts or memories, the eight external consciousnesses are not clear. Although there are no other thoughts or memories in the mind, there is only the feeling of the mind abiding in one-pointedness, but there is no looking at the nature of abiding. When meditating on that, one may have the feeling of not knowing where the sun has gone, which is called the Hearer's Similar Cessation, which is faultless calm abiding. It is okay for a short while at first, but one should not always meditate like that. What is faultless calm abiding then? The mind abides wherever it is placed, brightly and clearly. When meditating on that, the eight consciousnesses, such as the eyes and ears, do not stop, but are clear individually. The body and mind are filled with bliss, so there is no boredom. When meditating on that, it appears as one meditates. When not meditating, one does not need to wake up from it, it is the basis of the meditation of mere calm abiding with great autonomy. Furthermore, there is...

By meditating on quiescence, physical and mental happiness arises. If great attachment arises to this and it is held as supreme, one is born in the desire realm. If one cultivates it without attachment, it becomes a path. In that quiescence, by striving against the antidote to the mind's wandering thoughts, joy and happiness arise, and one abides in one-pointedness, which is the first dhyana. Without the need for discursive thoughts that fear wandering, the mind is clear and abides in one-pointedness, which is the second dhyana. Without thoughts of pleasure and pain, possessing mindfulness and awareness, one abides in one-pointedness, which is the third dhyana. Without discursive thoughts of pleasure and pain, and mental happiness and unhappiness, without exhaling and inhaling, and with an unwavering mind, pure equanimity and mindfulness is the fourth dhyana. From the mouth of the Vidyadhara Rangjung Dorje: 'Having discursive thoughts is the antidote. By striving with one-pointedness in that, the fruit of joy and happiness is greatly born. That is the first dhyana. Being free from discursive thoughts and one-pointed, being extremely clear within, possessing joy and happiness is the second. Being free from discursive thoughts of pleasure and pain, possessing mindfulness and awareness, one-pointed, is called the third dhyana. Discursive thoughts of pleasure and pain, and mental happiness and unhappiness, mental happiness and unhappiness, exhaling and inhaling, without the eight faults and unwavering, pure equanimity and mindfulness is called the fourth dhyana.' Thus he spoke. Even if such a good quiescence arises, if one cultivates it without attachment, it becomes a path. If one clings to it and holds it as supreme, thinking that this is meditation and practicing it, then although one temporarily obtains contaminated clairvoyance and miraculous powers, one will not transcend samsara. By meditating on the first dhyana, one is born in the Brahma Assembly, Brahma Retinue, and Great Brahma realms. By meditating on the second dhyana, one is born in the Limited Light, Immeasurable Light, and Clear Light realms. By meditating on the third dhyana, one is born in the Virtuous, Limited Virtue, and Immeasurable Virtue realms. By meditating on the fourth dhyana, one is born in the Cloudless, Merit-Born, and Great Fruit realms. In those realms, one is born through quiescence alone, and outsiders and Bonpos are born in the same way. The outsiders consider obtaining just that much to be the ultimate result.
