Through practice, one can attain Bodhi. Without the perfection of meditation, there is no way to become a Buddha. Do not think that calming the mind is a small matter; it is very important to do as much as possible. In the Bodhisattva grounds, it is said: When the Bodhisattva's perfection of meditation is complete, they will manifest the unexcelled, perfectly complete enlightenment and become a Buddha. They will manifest complete Buddhahood. They will manifest complete Buddhahood, thus it is said. So, what is calming the mind, and what is insight? Lord Maitreya said: Relying on correct abiding, to place the mind on the mind, and to fully distinguish all phenomena, is calming the mind and insight. Thus it is said. Placing the mind equally on the mind, without scattering anywhere, abiding in its own place, abiding serenely, clearly, and brightly, that is calming the mind. Make the mind abide without scattering as much as possible. This completes the six dharmas. It is good to meditate on this for a long time. Then comes the seventh dharma: In the text, it says: The ordinary mind that scatters everywhere is considered coarse. Those that appear clearly, unlike the ordinary mind, are called awareness. Explaining the meaning of what is said: Here, first is insight, and then the union of calming and insight. Wherever the mind abides without scattering, that is calming. Looking at the nature of that abiding, without any form, color, or object, seeing with insight is insight. Although not established, it still abides clearly and brightly, the two are inseparable, that is the union of calming and insight. Placing the mind in its own place, without stopping but scattering, that is movement. Seeing that movement is calming. Looking at the nature of the movement, the nature is not established, it is as peaceful as water and waves, that is insight. The movement and the emptiness of the nature of the movement are inseparable, that is the union of calming and insight. The Great Orgyen said: Its sound does not cease, in the self-illumination without an object, a naked and clear state will appear. Those are called insight. Those two, wisdom, are inseparable in a moment. The nature of it will appear in a clear state. That is called the union of calming, insight. Thus it is said. Furthermore, the scriptural authority that shows that is: In the Vajra Peak Tantra.

All dharmas are without substance, without characteristics and without birth. Without characteristics, like the sky. Completely abandon all objects of focus. Thus it is said. Vajradhara said: The Buddha of definite fruition knows the nature of the completely pure Dharmakaya. Just that is Buddhahood, which is the intention of Samantabhadra. Thus it is said. The great accomplished Padmasambhava said: Whatever is said is a false and wrong view, abandon it! Whatever you are attached to, abandon it too! If it becomes conceptual thought, everything is it, no one can know anything other than that. Thus it is said. The mind that is left uncorrected is the Buddha, let all going, staying, sleeping, and sitting be relaxed. Since the root of all conceptual thoughts is the mind, there is no conceptual thought because there is no mind. Thus it is said. All dharmas are one's own mind, and there is not a single other dharma apart from the mind. Whoever realizes the mindlessness from the beginning, finds the supreme intention of the Buddhas of the three times. Thus it is said. Some are bound by the distinctions of the mind, leaving the master at home and searching elsewhere. Some cling to images as real. Some abandon the root and cut the branches, but they do not realize that they have been deceived, alas! Although children do not understand this truth, I realize it without wavering in the nature of this truth. Because I know the beginning and end of myself, I see myself, and my own self is a naga, a single body. Thus it is said. Padmabirupa said: Mind itself is the great seal of emptiness, free from elaboration, like the nature of the sky, originally like emptiness. The essence of reality is unborn, free from the reality of characteristics, pervading everything like the sky, without change or transformation. Thus it is said. The direct disciple of the great teacher Padmasambhava, the Pandit Kamalashila, later known as the Holy One of India, said: The unborn Dharmakaya is like the essence of the sun, clear light without increase or decrease, Dingriwa! The continuous path of conceptual thought is like an empty thief, in reality there is no gain or loss, Dingriwa! Feeling without trace is like a ripple in water, illusion without clinging, Dingriwa! Habitual memory is like a rainbow in the sky, the amount of attachment cannot be determined, Dingriwa! The reality of movement appears like a rainbow, the mind has no attachment, Dingriwa! Non-attachment, self-liberation is like an autumn cloud, there is no attachment to other objects, Dingriwa! Real awareness
