See if you can come and abide. If you cannot abide at all, this is the law of manifestation, so there is no need for regret and suffering about it. In general, the practice of calm abiding is the perfection of meditation among the six perfections. In the Bodhisattva-bhumi, it says: For the meditation of the Bodhisattvas, it is to generate the complete separation from all conceptual thoughts, the extreme training of body and mind, the supreme tranquility, the separation from pride, the absence of tasting, and the separation from all characteristics. That is, one should know that they abide in happiness in this life. As it is said, therefore, whether the mind exists or not, whether it abides or not, etc., abiding without the movement of conceptual thoughts, the body, speech, and mind are without unwholesome thoughts, without the pride of thinking "this is practice," the calm abiding pervades the body and mind with happiness, and there is no attachment or craving for it. Without clinging to any object of focus, the mind abides naturally, which is good calm abiding. Padmasambhava said: There is not a speck of something to meditate on, and one does not want to be distracted for a moment. This is the meditation of the Great Seal. As it is said, do not think of anything and abide without distraction. If you tighten too much, you will not want to abide, so relax the three doors of body, speech, and mind and abide. The great accomplished Sara said: This mind itself, bound by distortion, if loosened, there is no doubt that it will be liberated. Just as a Brahmin spins thread, a yogi is happy when he loosens his awareness. And: If it is bound, then begin to pull in ten directions. If it is loosened, it will abide steadily without moving, like a camel freed from its rope. As it is said. Also, it is said by the incarnation of Jeban Nyakchen Jana, the great accomplished Prajnabhadra: Do not think about the past, do not think about the future, do not think about the present, do not meditate with the mind, do not examine with conceptual thought, the mind is truly liberated. Also, the great accomplished Shavari said: There is nothing to meditate on, do not keep it in mind. For ordinary awareness, the original nature, do not confuse it with artificial objects of focus. For the naturally pure mind, there is no need for artificiality. Do not grasp, do not let go, abide in your own natural state. As it is said, leave the mind uncorrected in its own nature. There are two situations, without fault and with fault. The faulty ones are: the state of darkness, dullness, sluggishness, and bewilderment, abiding without clarity and without radiating. It is always like that.

If not all, occasionally such occurrences are normal fluctuations of the human constitution. When the mind does not wander, remaining clear and bright like a crystal ball, or like a candle unmoved by the wind, abiding single-pointedly, that is calm abiding (shamatha). Although there are no outward-wandering thoughts, there are some subtle discriminating thoughts within itself, such as thinking, "Abiding clearly and brightly, not wandering, this is calm abiding." This thought also carries a slight element of deliberation, which is the first dhyana. Even subtle deliberation ceases, and while abiding, there is an attachment to the heart channels and a feeling of joy, that is the second dhyana. While the mind abides, although there is no attachment to the feeling of joy, the body feels comfortable and light, wanting to remain, and due to the immeasurable joy of the mind, there is no interest in any external desires, abiding in a state of comfort, that is the third dhyana. While the mind abides, there is neither a feeling of joy nor comfort, nor a feeling of displeasure or discomfort, the mind abides calmly, that is the fourth dhyana. These four dhyanas arise from abandoning distraction, maintaining pure discipline, and meditating single-pointedly; they do not arise in just anyone. This is a worldly path, the cause of being reborn as a god in the form realm. It is a path common to outsiders, the main practice of non-Buddhist ascetics. For Buddhists, it is only the basis for meditation, not the actual practice. As the Vidyadhara Nagarjuna said: "Desire, enjoyment, pleasure, and suffering, the four dhyanas that completely abandon them, attain equality with Brahma, luminosity, purity, and increasing virtue, and those with great results." That is to say, when the mind abides, because the mind abides within the body, if it wanders outward, it must be stopped. Therefore, there is a slight attachment to stopping wandering, which is the calm abiding of the Hearer's path that is in accordance with liberation. If this becomes stable, even if many years pass, it feels like only a moment. These do not give rise to afflictions and desires such as attachment and hatred. Previously, Saraha took a Brahmin girl and meditated in a secluded place. The girl wanted to gather some vegetables, and Saraha entered a state of calm abiding that stopped wandering, lasting for twelve years. After twelve years, he awoke and asked her what vegetables she wanted. She said, "You have been in samadhi for twelve years, and now it is spring, there are no vegetables."
