Pages 401 to 444. Pages 401 to 444. When meditating on it, the five poisons of affliction cease. If one can abide in it as long as one wishes, that is the worldly calm abiding of the Hearers and the common path. The more stable this calm abiding is, the greater the ability and merit. Some people's bodies and minds are completely filled with joy and great bliss. The mind's natural state of abiding is like a great ocean that is not moved by the wind, steadily abiding. Because it is the calm abiding of blissful experience, if one cultivates it without attachment, merit will arise. If one meditates on it with strong attachment, one will fall into the gods of the desire realm. Some people will experience a state where the mind is focused on one point, like a lamp that is not moved by the wind. Although this is a faultless calm abiding, if one clings to meditating on it with strong attachment, it will be the cause of being reborn as a god in the form realm. Some people will feel that there is nothing in their mind, nothing to scatter, nothing to abide, nothing at all, it is emptiness, abiding in that single thought alone, without scattering at all. This is the cause of being born in the formless realm, such as the realm of nothingness. One should not cling to meditating on it. However, these are all necessary to experience. Without stepping on the lower steps, one cannot reach the top. All of these arise in sequence, and the merit and power of meditation will be greater. Some people have little experience of abiding, and a lot of scattering and wildness. The mind does not stay still for even a moment, running like a whirlwind in all directions. One will think, "I cannot meditate," and that is also a kind of abiding, called a rough experience. The mind does not stay still, but awareness itself is abiding. The mind has been like this for countless eons, but only now is it seen. Now it is like recognizing a thief. When the mind wanders, look closely at what shape, color, and object the wanderer and runner have. When you look at it like this, it will disappear and return to its natural state. In general, if you try too hard, the mind will not stay still, so relax your body and mind, and just stay without being distracted, and naturally it will abide. Some people's minds abide a little bit, and they think, "This time it's good," but then suddenly they scatter far away. Thinking that this is not good, they pull it back, and it abides a little bit. They will do this kind of thing repeatedly. This is scattering, it is the conceptual thought of scattering at some time in the past.

Look at where it comes from, look at what its nature is like now, look at where it ultimately goes from here, and you will see that these three are inherently without nature. For example, just as when you cut down a single bamboo from a bamboo grove and see that the inside is empty, know that all bamboos are the same. When you realize that a thought is without self-nature and is free from the three—arising, abiding, and ceasing—know that all thoughts are the same. Generally, since this is the time for shamatha, try to abide as much as possible without letting the mind wander. If it does wander, draw it back and try to abide as much as possible. See how long you can abide without the mind wandering. And this is not referring to unclear drowsiness and sinking, but to abiding with the mind focused on one point, clearly, brightly, nakedly. If the body and mind feel relaxed and happy, it is said that common shamatha has arisen. It is called abiding arising, it is called the experience of abiding. It belongs to the category of the perfection of meditative concentration among the six perfections. Some people say that there is a danger of going astray with shamatha and speak badly. If shamatha arises as it is, it can also suppress the source of afflictions. All the signs of the accomplishment of common superknowledges come from this. The non-Buddhist hermits flying five hundred yojanas and so forth, also have limitless signs of the accomplishment of contaminated superknowledges, and this is also the power of shamatha alone. Just like a large, dense cloud, the better shamatha is established, the greater the qualities and abilities of vipassanā. Just like a small piece of cloud has only a few raindrops, if shamatha is not established, even if vipassanā is introduced, it is just a dry understanding and will not be effective. Generally, the shamatha without characteristics that says to leave the mind uncorrected and let it rest naturally, and the shamatha without focus that says to abide without focusing on anything, these are also in the preliminaries. They are also the main practice of both shamatha and vipassanā. Each of these has its own specific meaning depending on the context. Because the words are simple, even a child can understand them, but the practice is difficult even for an old meditator. Therefore, do not think anything in your mind, do not make any corrections, and let it rest naturally. Do not be like a blank stare that does not remember anything, but also see the abiding without wandering. Even if you abide in this for a long time, maintain the abiding. Do not be like unconscious fainting and sleeping, but maintain that state as much as possible.
