Furthermore, having taken countless bodies with obstructions, accumulating flesh and bones is comparable to the world, accumulating pus and blood is comparable to the great ocean, and accumulating karmic connections is inconceivable and beyond words. So it is said. If such sinful deeds are not confessed, they will not be wasted, and at some point, they will surely ripen upon oneself. As the Bhagavan said: The deeds of sentient beings will not be destroyed even after hundreds of eons; when they gather and the time comes, they will ripen into fruit. So it is said. If one knows the means of confessing sins and confesses, they can be purified. In the Sutra of Great Secret Skillful Means, it is said: Son of lineage, if you take thorough examination, even if a Bodhisattva who has renounced the world has transcended all four root downfalls, if he purifies them with this skillful means, I say that he will not fall into the downfalls of a Bodhisattva. So it is said. Thus, knowing the key to confession, even a single confession can purify many sins. In the Great Nirvana Sutra, it is said: Doing one virtuous deed can destroy many sins. And just as a small vajra pestle can destroy Mount Sumeru, a small fire can burn plants and trees, and a small poison can kill sentient beings, so too, doing a small virtuous deed can destroy great sins, and it is indeed a great endeavor. And in the Sutra of Golden Light, it is said: In thousands of eons, one commits extremely unpleasant sins; with one forceful confession, all of them will be purified. So it is said. The means of confession is the four powers. In the Sutra of the Essence of Teaching the Four Dharmas, it is said: If Maitreya Bodhisattva possesses the four dharmas, he will be able to overcome all the sins he has committed and accumulated. What are the four? They are: the power of regret, the power of applying remedies, the power of abstaining from wrongdoing, and the power of reliance. Among them, the power of regret is to have remorse for sinful and unwholesome deeds. The power of applying remedies is to diligently confess. The power of abstaining from wrongdoing is to properly keep the vows not to commit sins in the future. The power of reliance is to always be inseparable from the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. If Maitreya, the great Bodhisattva, possesses these four dharmas, he will be able to overcome and abandon all sins.

Thus it was said. Then, combining the four powers into one and practicing them, with intense remorse as if a potent poison had entered one's stomach for all the sins and downfalls accumulated since beginningless lifetimes, and with the mind firmly resolved not to act in that way again, taking it as a vow. The power of reliance is to contemplate the Great Compassionate One, the embodiment of all the Jewels. The power of remedy is to recite the ten-syllable or six-syllable mantra. By contemplating the Great Compassionate One, sins are purified. As it is said in the Thousand Hands and Thousand Eyes Sutra: Even just uttering the name of Avalokiteśvara purifies countless sins and obscurations, and one obtains immeasurable merit, and after dying from here, one will be born in Sukhavati. And as it is said in the Eleven-Faced Sutra: If one utters and remembers my name, one will be free from all harm; all sins and obscurations will be purified; one will be liberated from all fears; one will be liberated and protected from all evil spirits and obstacles; all good qualities will increase; all inauspiciousness will subside. And as it is said in the Padma Raja Tantra: After explaining the method of contemplating the form of the Great Compassionate One, it says: Even by contemplating and remembering, one purifies the obscurations of the five heinous crimes. And as it is said in the Noble Eleven-Faced Avalokiteśvara Dharani: The great Bodhisattva, the Noble Avalokiteśvara, Lord of Power, supplicated: Bhagavan, holding my name is meaningful; it is superior to holding the names of hundreds of thousands of millions of Buddhas. All sentient beings who hold my name will abide in the state of non-retrogression; they will be completely liberated from all diseases; they will be completely liberated from all obscurations and all misdeeds of body, speech, and mind. Thus it was said. It is also said: Whatever mantra is, it is the name itself. Therefore, if the six syllables are understood according to transliteration, it is the one who holds the jewel and lotus, that is, the name of the Great Compassionate One. Thus, remembering and contemplating the Great Compassionate One is the supreme power of reliance for confessing sins. In general, any virtuous deed is an antidote to sins, but especially this great vidya-mantra of ten or six syllables is the most supreme of the powers of universally applying the antidote to confessing sins.
