It is said to be self-nature. Also, in the Sutra of Precious Space, it says: Just as water is placed on water, just as ghee is placed on ghee, this self-wisdom of oneself, whatever is well seen, is the great mudra here. As it is said, so let the mind remain without alteration. Thus, the fifth Dharma phrase is completed. Then, the sixth Dharma phrase is from the scripture: Then, look inward at the mind, not remembering anything, like ignorance itself, abiding in this, one recognizes it. The meaning of what is said is: First, the faults of not meditating, the benefits of meditating, and what to meditate on, must be recognized. Among the four actual sessions of meditation, the first is: knowing the Dharma but not meditating is like dying of thirst at the seashore. The Noble Array of Trees Sutra says: This true teaching of the Buddha cannot be accomplished by merely hearing it. For example, some people are carried away by the river, helplessly and forcibly, and die of thirst, not meditating on the Dharma is also like that. Also, the Jewel Heap Sutra says: Light Protector, for example, some people are carried away by the ocean or great river and die of thirst for water. Light Protector, here some ascetics and Brahmins learn many Dharmas and master them all, but do not eliminate the thirst for desire, do not eliminate the thirst for hatred, do not eliminate the thirst for ignorance, those people are carried away by the ocean of Dharma and will face death from the thirst of afflictions, and will fall into the lower realms. Also, the Sutra Requested by Light Protector says: Just as a person dies of thirst in the sea, a monk hears a lot, and is satisfied by hearing, but if he does not abandon afflictions, he will be reborn in the lower realms. Also, the Noble Array of Trees says: Hearing many Dharmas but not practicing them is like a poor person counting the wealth of others, but having nothing for himself. Also, the Sutra Division says: If one does not fully meditate on all Dharmas, one will not realize the nature of Dharma, seeing and hearing water, one cannot quench thirst without drinking it. Also, the Array of Trees Sutra says: Just as giving food and drink to many beings, but oneself dies of hunger, not meditating on the Dharma is also like that. Just as in a treasury of wealth, counting many jewels, but not obtaining even a speck.

It is similar with not practicing the Dharma. As it says in the "Extensive Sutra": For example, a deaf musician, others are delighted by him, but he himself cannot hear, not practicing the Dharma is also like that. Also, like from the great ocean, carrying boats and rafts, others are saved by it, but one drowns in the water and dies, not practicing the Dharma is also like that. Therefore, being learned in the Dharma without practicing it oneself is of no benefit, and even ordinary people, having received instruction, should not be lazy but should strive to practice, which is very important. Second, the benefits of practice: In the "Samadhiraja Sutra" it says: It is more meritorious to lead all beings of the three realms to the path of the ten virtues than to have faith in the Dharma of selflessness and take seven steps towards a solitary place. Also, as it says in the "Sutra of the Definitive Revelation of Reality": Shariputra, if someone listens for ten kalpas, it is more meritorious than someone who meditates on the meaning of reality for the time it takes to snap one's fingers, the latter accumulates more merit. Shariputra, therefore, this samadhi of reality should be diligently taught to others. Shariputra, all the Bodhisattvas in the Buddha's teachings abide in this samadhi. So it is said. In the "Great Contemplation Sutra" it says: To enter a session of meditation for a moment is more meaningful than giving life to people filling the three realms. Also, as it says in the "Entering the Holy Path Sutra": It is more meritorious to meditate on emptiness for a single session than to accumulate the necessities of life for all beings until the end of their lives. In the "Twenty Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita Sutra" it says: In the realm of the three thousand great thousand worlds, however many beings dwell there, completely satisfying them with generosity, and establishing them in morality, samadhi, wisdom, liberation, and the wisdom of liberation, as well as the stream-enterer and self-enlightenment, it is more meritorious for someone to meditate on this Prajnaparamita, even for just the time it takes to snap one's fingers. Also, as it says in the "Great Crown Sutra": It is more meritorious to meditate on the meaning of Dharma-nature for one day than to accumulate listening for many kalpas. Why is that? Because it lengthens the path of birth and death. Also, as it says in the "Great Earth Sutra": The yogi
