Like a long river flowing continuously, may I abide in the place of enjoyment like a ripened fruit. Therefore, I will first praise compassion! It is said in the Compendium of Trainings: This is what pleases the Tathagatas, this is what satisfies sentient beings, and this is what perfectly accomplishes one's own benefit. It is said in the Sutra Requested by Sagaramati: These three are the supreme offerings to the Tathagatas: generating the mind of enlightenment, upholding the sacred Dharma, and cherishing love for all living beings. Thus, generating the mind of enlightenment and meditating on loving-kindness and compassion accomplish all the benefits of oneself and others. It is said in the Bodhicharyavatara: From now until I fall asleep, or even if I am heedless, the power of merit will continuously and uninterruptedly arise, as vast as the sky. It is extremely important for the sons of the Buddhas, not generating evil but naturally increasing good. At that time, my fruit will appear, and I will have well obtained the power of human life. Today I am born into the lineage of the Buddhas, and now I have become a son of the Buddhas. This is the power of the mind of enlightenment, the treasure of all past merits, and one easily obtains the state of a Buddha's son. It is also said: In the moment of generating the mind of enlightenment, those who are bound and suffering in the prison of samsara are called the sons of the Buddhas, and the gods and humans of the world should pay homage. Like the supreme alchemy, abandoning this impure body and obtaining the body of a Buddha, because it can transform priceless treasures, one should always firmly hold onto the mind of enlightenment. Other virtuous deeds are like trees by the water, bearing fruit and eventually being exhausted. The tree of the mind of enlightenment always bestows fruit and never diminishes, but rather increases. Even if one commits extremely heavy sins, like a warrior relying on great fear, relying on it, one can be liberated in an instant, so why would those with mindfulness not rely on it? It is like the fire at the end of time, which can surely burn away sins in an instant. This is the supreme nectar that destroys the lord of death for beings, and it is also the inexhaustible treasure that removes the poverty of beings, and it is the rising moon of the mind that dispels the suffering of beings' afflictions, and it is the removal of the obscuration of beings' wisdom.

(Seed syllable, Tibetan)! It is the great sun that bestows abundant rain! Thus it is said. Like this, if there is no loving-kindness and compassion, even if one only meditates on emptiness, one will not attain the state of complete and perfect enlightenment. Because one will fall into the path of the lesser vehicle of hearers and solitary realizers, it is also the main method for dispelling obstacles. In the "Heap of Jewels Sutra," it is said: For example, it is impossible for seeds to grow in the sky; it has not happened in the past, will not happen in the future, and does not happen in the present. Similarly, in the unconditioned dharma, the Buddhadharma has not arisen in the past, and will not arise in the future. Thus it is said. Similarly, in the "Sutra of Renowned Without Stain," it is said: Son of good family, for example, lotus flowers, water lilies, blue lotuses, and so on, do not grow in barren lands; they only grow in mud and ponds. Son of good family, similarly, the dharmas of the Buddhas do not arise in a mind that has attained the unconditioned. Thus it is said. Therefore, towards the suffering of sentient beings in the six realms, one should generate intense compassion and unbearable feelings. If there is a way, one should enter their situation and meditate to the point of being able to liberate them. This is the initial meditation on loving-kindness and compassion focused on sentient beings. When one realizes that all phenomena of appearance and existence are like illusions, dreams, and reflections of the moon in water, then one should cultivate compassion for beings who suffer from delusion because they have not realized this. This is loving-kindness and compassion focused on the dharma. When one realizes that all sentient beings are empty of inherent existence and that there is no separation between self and others, then from the state of realization, compassion naturally arises for beings who are deluded because they have not realized this. This is unconditioned great compassion, also called the samadhi of innate great compassion. Although it is said like this, for the time being, because it is the initial practice, Orgyen Rinpoche said: May all the merit accumulated from my body, possessions, and experiences of bliss and emptiness, and all the happiness of body, speech, and mind, be attained by my kind parents! May all the non-virtue, sickness, suffering, and bad karma of the body, speech, and mind of my kind parents ripen upon me! In this way, one should dedicate with one's mind and also recite with one's mouth. In short, with unbearable compassion, one should meditate on being able to truly exchange oneself with others. Thus it is said. Also, in the "Bodhicharyavatara," it is said: If one does not exchange one's own happiness for the suffering of others, one will not only fail to attain Buddhahood, but will also have no happiness in samsara. Thus it is said, and the tradition here is to cultivate loving-kindness and compassion simultaneously.
