The first two are loving-kindness, the latter two are compassion, and the last shows the essence of loving-kindness and compassion. The meaning of these is explained in detail as follows: The *Ratnakuta Sutra* says that no matter how many immeasurable offerings are made, even if the most excellent person is offered in countless Buddha lands, it is not as good as a drop of rain of loving-kindness. The *Anguttara Nikaya* says that gods and humans will become loving-kindness, and they will all be protected, have peace of mind, increase happiness, have no harm from poison and weapons, can be obtained without effort, and will be reborn in the Brahma world. Even if they are not liberated, they can obtain the eight merits of loving-kindness. Also, the *Mahaparinirvana Sutra* says that whoever in a pure world, for a kalpa, guards pure precepts, is not as good as a person who practices loving-kindness for a moment. Whoever in this world commits evil deeds with body, speech, and mind will surely fall into the three evil realms, but the mind of loving-kindness can immediately liberate them. Also, the *Lalitavistara Sutra* says that those who have Bodhicitta will not be harmed by poison and weapons, zombies and other fears will not occur, those who have Bodhicitta will not be harmed by others, the demon hordes with armies, and the black retinue with banners and claws, can be destroyed by the power of loving-kindness, and can also be silently enlightened in the supreme Bodhi. Also, the *Ratnavali* says that even if three hundred Brahmins are given food three times a day, it is not as good as the merit of a moment of loving-kindness. Also, the *Vimalakirti Nirdesa Sutra* says that in the northeast, there is a Buddha land called "Buddha Great Free King," adorned with a thousand worlds, where all beings have the same happiness as a monk entering cessation. Practicing pure conduct there for a hundred million kalpas is not as good as generating a mind of loving-kindness towards all beings in this world, even for the duration of a finger snap. The merit generated by the latter far exceeds the former, let alone abiding in it day and night? As it is said, the benefits of cultivating loving-kindness are infinite, and compassion arises from relying on loving-kindness, Bodhicitta arises from relying on compassion, and Bodhi is attained from relying on Bodhicitta. Second, the benefits of compassion are:

In the Tantra of Manifest Enlightenment, it says: "Lord of Secrets, the root of attaining omniscience is great compassion, and the cause is the mind of enlightenment." Also, in the Compendium, it says: "In the human world, there are many elemental harms and diseases, but the blessings of benefit and compassion are like a mass of fire." Also, in the White Lotus of Compassion, it says: "If a Bodhisattva possesses one Dharma, then all the Dharmas of the Buddhas are in his hands. What is that one Dharma? It is great compassion." Thus, the root of the Great Vehicle, the basis of Secret Mantra, the way to cultivate loving-kindness and compassion is as follows: Orgyen Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) said: "The main object of loving-kindness and compassion is not the mother who gave birth to your body, but her kindness is immeasurable and endless in samsara, so cultivate immeasurable loving-kindness and compassion towards her. First, think of my poor mother, who cannot fill her stomach no matter how much she eats, and if she doesn't eat, she swells up and feels uncomfortable. Her mouth makes hissing sounds, her lips are dry, her nose runs, her face is pale and dull, both her body and mind are weak, her limbs are thin, and she groans in pain. My mother, how pitiful, cultivate this thought from the bottom of your heart. Then, as she gets older, she gets tired from working, and even when she is slightly thirsty, she feels short of breath. Her joints ache, she can't stand up or bend down, she doesn't know what to do, and she is always worried that any movement of her body will harm me, so she is very careful. If she doesn't feel me moving, she suffers, thinking, 'What's wrong with my child?' How pitiful, how kind she is! Then, tormented by the pain of childbirth, all her joints separate and break, her body feels like it's breaking apart, making cracking sounds, filth drips from her waist, she rolls around uncontrollably, crying 'Acha, Acha,' scratching the pillow with her fingernails, giving birth in a state where her bones and eyes are about to break, how pitiful! Then, when I defecate on the bed, even in such pain, she can't bear it, she picks me up with a cloth and holds me to her chest, still unable to sleep peacefully, worrying if my child is cold or if something is wrong. If I cry a little, she will think, 'Is he hungry, is he thirsty, is he possessed by a demon, is something wrong, is he going to die?' Her heart is uneasy, she wipes my feces and urine with her hands, sucks my snot with her mouth, and licks it with her tongue."
