Whatever manifests ripens first. Those who have committed sins experience happiness because the fruits of their virtuous deeds in previous lives ripen in this life. All merits are perfected in this life, and afterwards they go to a place without liberation. This is called the dissolution of this life. Furthermore, if suffering arises in this life from practicing Dharma and virtue, it is because the fruits of sins committed in previous lives are being experienced in this life. The fruits of practicing virtue and Dharma in this life will bring great happiness in future lifetimes. By practicing Dharma with single-pointed focus or accumulating vast roots of virtue, whatever bad karma and obscurations from previous lifetimes are taken away. All the great suffering of the lower realms that would have been experienced in other lifetimes is purified in this life merely through the torment of illness, and from future lives onwards, the supreme state of happiness upon happiness is attained. The Nirvana Sutra states: Those sons or daughters of good families who desire the sacred Dharma, all the countless sinful deeds they have committed will be purified merely through headaches, plagues, illnesses, pains, and the slanders of others, and they will quickly attain unsurpassed enlightenment. Padmasambhava said: When practicing profound secret mantras, the occurrence of many inauspicious events such as illnesses and sufferings is like dirt rising when washing a vessel. He extensively explained that this is a sign of clearing away obscurations. Furthermore, even great Bodhisattvas in sacred places who have practiced Dharma with single-pointed focus throughout their lives and have good realization, experience intense suffering of cutting off breath for a long time at the time of death, and unbearable sharp pains arise. This is because all the remaining karmic obscurations are purified at the time of death, and it is a sign of realizing death as the Dharmakaya or going to a pure land. Jetsun Milarepa experienced severe bone pain. Phagmo Drupa and Dromtonpa and others contracted leprosy. Considering such reasons, the Tathagata said: Rather than being born in the three lower realms and other endless samsaric existences, in worlds without leisure, may whatever (bad karma) there is ripen thoroughly in this very life, and may I not experience it in other instances. Thus, this aspiration.

This is how it is accomplished. For example, even though Sneu Rdzong Nagpa knew he would be doused with cold water, he still went there. Therefore, even if a pure practitioner has a bad experience at the time of death, it is not necessarily a bad thing. Just as the Bodhisattva Metog Zla Mdzés was killed innocently. The King of Kalingka said, even if he cuts off my limbs, I will not have any thoughts of anger. If a very great good or bad deed was done in a previous life, it must ripen in this life. If in this life it is destined to be long-lived and free from illness, then even if a thousand heretics and Bon practitioners cast curses, they cannot cause harm. If it is destined to enjoy wealth and power, then even if enemies arise from all four directions, they cannot take away his power. If it is destined to be short-lived and have many illnesses, even if a thousand practitioners with true words protect him, or a young doctor is called to heal him, it will be of no avail.

As for the uncertain karma, it is said to be like the karma in the continuum of an Arhat. For example, before Shakyamuni Buddha attained enlightenment, he was supposed to be born as five hundred universal monarchs. Because he attained enlightenment without having the opportunity to be born, he dedicated his merit to the livelihood of the Shravakas. Even when a time came when a bre of pearls could not buy a bre of grain, he said, "My Shravakas will not suffer from lack of livelihood." Therefore, when we ordained ones keep our vows and commitments pure, this is one of the great keys to not falling into the path of accumulating wealth. The virtuous karma of the desire realm is the karma of merit. The non-virtuous karma of the desire realm is the karma of non-merit. The virtuous karma of the form and formless realms is the immovable karma. The virtuous karma of the upper realms is purely white karma. The non-virtuous karma of the desire realm is purely black karma. The virtuous karma of the desire realm is mixed karma. The uncontaminated virtuous karma is the karma that exhausts the ripening result. For example, the captain, out of great compassion, killed the black demon with a short spear in order to save the lives of five hundred people, and Lhalung Pelgyi Dorje killed King Langdarma for the sake of the teachings. These are examples of karma where the intention is white but the action is black. Giving alms in order to kill is an example of karma where the intention is black but the action is white. Giving alms with a pure intention is an example of karma where the intention is white and the action is white. Killing in order to eat meat is an example of karma where the intention is black and the action is black. Furthermore, the virtuous karma from the desire realm up to the third dhyana is the karma of experiencing happiness. The non-virtuous karma of the desire realm is the karma of experiencing suffering. The virtuous karma from the third dhyana upwards is the karma of experiencing equanimity. Furthermore, the ten virtuous karmas, both contaminated and uncontaminated, are virtuous karma. The ten non-virtuous karmas are non-virtuous karma. Liberation and Nirvana are unspecified karma. Furthermore, the karma of afflictions in the upper realms is obscured and unspecified karma. Actions such as those of a craftsman are unobscured and unspecified karma. The karma that forms the outer world is the common karma of all sentient beings. The karma that forms the inner sentient beings is uncommon karma.
