The suffering of being fiercely stabbed with five hundred short spears is just a small suffering of hell. It is neither a joke nor can it be endured. Merely seeing, hearing, remembering, reciting, or visualizing the hellish scenes will give rise to unbearable suffering. What need is there to mention if one experiences its ripening result in person? Thus it is said. As for pretas, it is said in the "Letter to a Friend": Even in the realm of pretas, the suffering caused by the lack of desires is continuous. The suffering caused by hunger, thirst, heat, cold, fatigue, and fear is extremely unbearable and should be relied upon. Some pretas have mouths as small as the eye of a needle, but their stomachs are as large as mountains, and they are tormented by hunger. Even a small amount of discarded impure matter, they do not have the power to enjoy. Some pretas are just skin and bones, their bodies naked, like dry palm leaves. Some pretas search for food, but flames burn from their mouths; merely the burning food falling into their mouths is a suffering. Some wretched beings cannot even find pus, feces, and blood, etc., which are impure. They gather together and devour the ripe pus that comes from tumors in their throats. For these pretas, the moon in summer becomes hot, and the sun in winter becomes cold. These trees become fruitless, and merely looking at them causes rivers to dry up. Thus it is said. As for animals, it is said in the "Abhidharmakosha": Animals hate and kill each other, and are killed without autonomy, etc. They are always tormented by suffering, and are mostly similar to hell beings. Thus it is said. In the "Letter to a Friend" it says: Even in the place of animal existence, there are various sufferings such as killing, binding, and beating. For those who abandon peace and virtue, mutual devouring is extremely unbearable. Some animals are killed for pearls, wool, bones, meat, and leather. Other helpless animals are kicked, beaten, and used after being stabbed with iron and sharp iron hooks. Thus it is said. Humans also have the suffering of birth, old age, sickness, and death. In the "Sutra on the Establishment of Mindfulness" it says: Although eighty types of suffering pervade sentient beings, the suffering of humans is the main one. Asuras, because they are naturally jealous of the glory of the gods, have great mental suffering. Thus it is said. Even desire realm gods have, when a god's son dies, five signs of decline appear

Alas! Clothes will become stained, garlands will become old, sweat will flow from both armpits, the body will emit a foul odor, and the son of the gods will dislike his own abode. Thus it is said. In the Extensive Play Sutra, it says: Children are attached to and delighted in this samsara, just as pigs are attached to unclean things. Here, sentient beings fall like moths falling into a flame. Here, sentient beings are trapped like fish trapped in a net. Here, sentient beings revolve like a potter's wheel. Here, sentient beings are deceived like a con man deceiving a child. Thus it is said. The suffering of samsara can be seen with the eyes. Among the three lower realms, the suffering of animals is less. Among animals other than nagas, wild animals and gazelles are the happiest. Look at how wild animals are killed by predators and hunters. If such suffering were to befall oneself, could one endure it? Look at how gazelles are slaughtered by merchants. If such a thing were to happen to oneself, how much suffering would one feel? What assurance is there that one will not be born in such a place? How cold would it be to spend a day in the dead of winter without clothes? What would it be like to be born in a cold hell? If struck by a spark, would there be time to dodge? If born in a hot hell, could one endure it? What would it be like to go without food and drink for two or three days? What would it be like to be born as a preta? How much fear would one feel in a great commotion of noise? What would it be like to be born as an asura? If all of one's tents, homes, fields, houses, possessions, and food were taken by enemies, and one had to wander around begging, one would consider it a great suffering. But that is a hundred thousand times greater than the suffering of a god's decline and fall. If one does not see those things, one is blind. Even if one sees those things, and cannot move the heart, is it made of stone? (5) The profound secret instruction of great compassion, the method of saving from the suffering of samsara. Taking refuge is very important. In the Vajra verses of Avalokiteśvara, it says: Those who are frightened by the suffering of samsara, take refuge in the Three Jewels, And protect its teachings, cherish them as you would your own body. Thus it is said. Taking refuge
