Everything that arises beyond that is Śamatha-Vipassanā (calm abiding and insight), common to inner and outer, common to Bon and Buddhist, and common to the Greater and Lesser Vehicles. That meditation is not Mahāmudrā, as the Venerable Phagmo Drupa said: Having gone to the feet of the holy Lama, if you take any instruction to heart, bliss will arise, filling body and mind. If clinging and attachment arise, you will fall into the realm of desire. Clarity and purity are like the sky; the inner and outer are like the rising moon. There is no difference between opening and closing. If you cling to and are attached to that, and the practitioner protects it, you will fall into the realm of form. Even if you look outward and inward, there is not even the slightest thought. Having contemplated the Dharmakāya free from dust, if you cherish the experience of joy and displeasure, thinking in your mind, you will fall into the formless realm. Even if you meditate on bliss, clarity, and non-thought without attachment, you may still become a Śrāvaka or Pratyekabuddha. So it is said. The Venerable Jigten Sumgön said: Bliss, clarity, and non-thought, these three are the pitfalls of meditation. So it is said. So how should it be done? The Venerable Gampopa said: Do not focus too much on abiding among the two, abiding and thought. For abiding is also present in fainting, intoxication, and deep sleep, because it is not thought. So it is said. So, is Śamatha a single evil that should not arise? It is not so, for it is the basis and support for the arising of Mahāmudrā, as it is said in the Gawo Mngal Gnas kyi Do (Sutra of the Womb of Joy): Without a mind in Samadhi, defilements will not be abandoned. So it is said. In the oral instructions of the lineage of Siddhas, it is said: Whichever of those three abidings arises, recognize your own face from that point, find the warmth, and cut off doubts. If you recognize your own face in what has not arisen, you will mistakenly practice, desiring to become like that. Even the first abiding cannot shake much. Even in a single session of instruction, there is no way to avoid the arising of at least the intermediate abiding. So it is said. No matter how long or short the instruction is, the intermediate or worst abiding will definitely arise. Having given the introduction to Vipassanā to that, and having meditated, you have grasped the path of one taste. On this, Lord Mipham Padma Karpo and others, some of the Drukpa Kagyü school, consider the superior, intermediate, and inferior levels of one-pointedness to be purely Śamatha, and from then on.

When searching for the nature of mind and introducing Vipassanā, it is said that conceptual thoughts free from elaboration arise. Not employing Vipassanā until perfect single-pointedness is born refers to Vipassanā with excellent Śamatha, which is the tradition of the Kadam Lamrim of the Sutra system. It is not the tradition of Mahāmudrā and Dzogchen. This is the special characteristic given to the method of meditation by Jigten Sumgön, Zhang Rinpoche, and Gya Ras, in accordance with the experience of the monastery itself, in the order of the Four Yogas. Yoga means skillful means and wisdom, or the union of Śamatha and Vipassanā. Those who can unite with those yogas are called yogis. In the early translation of the inconceivable secret tantras and the later translation of the great river-like tantras of Āli Kālī, it says: With the Samādhi of a lion's majestic posture, with unwavering clarity of focus, awaken awareness, awaken self-born wisdom within, with steadfast patience, abandon the suffering of the lower realms. Also, the original monastery's oral instructions say: Initially, abiding in its natural state is the yoga of one-pointedness, in which the Samādhi of abiding is merely Śamatha. Here, yoga means that Śamatha and Vipassanā must be united. Subtle and coarse conceptual thoughts subside in their own place, and the mind abides clearly in the center of clear, empty space. The arising of certainty in non-conceptuality is the experience of Vipassanā. Therefore, the meditation that unites Śamatha and Vipassanā, during a good meditation, the non-conceptual awareness, in bliss and clarity, like a lion, naked and bright, is seeing the nature of bliss and clarity. Sometimes it doesn't come even when meditating, and sometimes it comes even without meditating, it is a small one-pointedness. Gyalwang Chöje said: The one-pointedness of one-pointedness spoken of here refers to abiding in one-pointedness in the state of pacifying distracted conceptual thoughts. The non-elaboration of one-pointedness refers to not focusing on the elaboration of characteristics from the level of abiding. The one taste of one-pointedness refers to the non-conceptual and the appearance of bliss and clarity, the three of bliss, clarity, and non-conceptuality of experience blended into one taste. The non-meditation of one-pointedness refers to gaining stability in this, and then day and night, continuously.
