And rainbows, etc. Furthermore, even with eyes closed, one can see clearly, walking, and seeing and experiencing various forms, sounds, smells, tastes, touches, etc. As stated in the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra: The meditation of children's near conduct, The meditation of distinguishing meanings, The meditation of suchness as the object, The meditation of the Tathāgata's excellent goodness, Yogis should strive diligently, Like the shapes of the sun and moon, Like light and lotuses, Seeing mountains, sky like fire, etc., Various signs Those can, Lead to the wrong paths of heretics, Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas, Will also fall into their realm of practice, All those should be abandoned, When it becomes non-manifest, At that time, the hands of Buddhas and gods, Of all arising from peace, Anoint the top of that, Is a sign of truly following. Thus it is said, no matter what wonderful visions arise, they are only a small sign of peace, not the actual meditation. Then, the first abiding arises. As asked in the *Gtsug na rin chen gyis zhus pa'i mdo* (Ratnakūṭa Sūtra): "Son of lineage, furthermore, the fastest of the fast, moving without abiding, like a monkey and the wind, like the flow of a stream, like the wick of an oil lamp, going to distant places, without a body, drying up in the realm, the six sense bases are the realm of practice, having the mind that knows the minds of others, abiding in one object, not scattering, being one-pointed in peace, without distraction, this is the abiding of the mind." Thus it is said. Tilopa said: Karma, Initially like water in a gorge. Zhang Rinpoche said: When the first abiding arises, Like a landslide tumbling down a cliff, Thoughts arise continuously, Thinking there is no meditation experience, The more thoughts arise, the more feeling, Is a slight experience of abiding, Before non-abiding, Thoughts are lost on their own, Constantly flowing but not knowing. Thus it is said. Both Ngédön Gyatso and the oral instructions of the lineage of siddhas say: Initially, the mind focuses on the object, there is one that abides like a small piece, that is just the extent of grasping the nose. Then gradually, slightly, if the fundamental experience feels more than before, it is not more. Before, there was no meditation, so even if thoughts arose, there was no feeling. Now, the mind is placed evenly, aware.

It is a clear feeling. Do not elaborate on it with conceptualization, and without following it, remain still. Do not lose the fluctuations beneath the feeling, and recognize the extent of what arises. Without needing specific remedies, awareness is like a nimble eye. If the continuity of meditation is unbroken, then the first state of abiding is said to be like water flowing from a steep cliff. Tilopa said, "The middle is like the Ganges River flowing slowly." Zhang Rinpoche said, "Thereafter, like a slowly flowing river, awareness is slow and thoughts are few." These meanings are explained in both the Definitive Meaning Ocean and the Oral Instructions of the Lineage of Siddhas. By guarding the view as above, thoughts become subtle and enter a state of non-thought. Sometimes thoughts arise suddenly, but they disappear like snow falling on a stone, without interruption. No matter how thoughts change, they are recorded and counted. If one's meditation becomes sluggish, then it is said to be the intermediate abiding, like a river flowing slowly. At this time, the second experience is like a stream flowing through a canyon, which comes from the oral tradition of the esteemed lamas. Sometimes it abides calmly, sometimes it surges rapidly. When surging, relax and watch. When abiding, gather slightly and remain in that state. This state is also likely to arise. Tilopa said, "The last is like water meeting mother and child." Zhang Rinpoche said, "Thereafter, like the depths of the ocean, awareness abides unmoving and stable." Both the Definitive Meaning Ocean and the oral instructions of the previous siddhas say: By guarding as before, coarse and subtle thoughts cease, and one abides peacefully in a state of non-thought. One does not feel the comfort or existence of the body. One does not feel the coming and going or cessation of breath. The mind is blissful, clear, and non-conceptual, running naturally. In post-meditation, if one is not skilled, one cannot grasp the details of objects. The mind does not engage in distraction. It seems to become very forgetful. Even without meditating, one naturally enters a state of meditation. If there is a clear state, like the center of a clear, cloudless sky, and a clear, boundless state arises, that is the final abiding, like an unmoving ocean. These are the main practices of meditation. If continued, siddhis and other abilities will arise, and it will become the basis for realizing the truth.
