There is no need to abandon anything anywhere. Just as there is no difference between the knowledge of confusion and non-confusion, like the ocean and its waves. Like that, whatever thought arises, stare directly at the arising thought. Without distraction in that state, rest directly. So it is said. In the "Mind Training Wish-Fulfilling Jewel," it says: Do not meditate on distraction, but relax and rest. "Without distraction" means not allowing the mind to be distracted by the past, not allowing the mind to be distracted by the future, and not allowing the mind to be distracted by the present. "Without meditation" means not holding onto any object of focus. "Relaxing" means abandoning all mental effort and resting. In the state of non-distraction and non-meditation, if thoughts suddenly arise, do not follow the thoughts, but maintain unwavering mindfulness of whatever thoughts arise. So it is said. Gyalsé Tokmépa said: If you look at the nature of the mind in its thought-free state, which is clear and bright, you will see that it is not established as anything, but remains empty and clear. That is what is called clear light, emptiness, and non-grasping. That has been present in everyone from the beginning, but it is obscured by the conceptualization of grasping and being grasped, so it is not recognized. Since you have seen its nature through the power of practice, look carefully to dispel any doubts about the emptiness of the mind. The manifestation of qualities will increase more and more, because this is the path that is the cause of supreme accomplishment. Practice and enjoy it with joy. So it is said. The cause-explaining Dharma Bhadra said: By leaving the three doors relaxed and effortless, the knowledge of the past ceases. In the interval before future thoughts arise, that thought-free state of mind is the alaya. Look at that without distraction, look clearly without a seer or seen, and if clear light, free from elaboration, and free from all conceptualization arises, then you have recognized the nature. If it does not arise, then you have not recognized the nature. If you rest like that and sudden thoughts arise, with grasping and clinging, that is samsara. Because there is nothing in appearance and existence that is not a manifestation of conceptual thought. Once conceptual thought is purified, there is no need to seek nirvana separately, because one's own mind is the clear light buddha. If you look at whatever thought arises and it vanishes into clear light without a trace, that is nirvana. All sorrowful nirvana is none other than the arising of conceptual thought as wisdom.

If you examine closely, conceptual thoughts are fabricated by the mind. The past is unborn, the present is unborn, and the future is liberated; all three are without inherent existence. Abide in the un fabricated natural state, and if you abide, look at the nature of abiding; if you move, look at the nature of moving; there is nothing else besides that. In the state of bliss and clarity, remain undistracted and alert; that is the essence of practice. Because you abide in that state, qualities will gradually arise, so whether there are faults or not, you must guard it. For good or bad experiences, have no like or dislike, relax your mind and guard it. In general, for a meditation that is complete with goodness and excellence, do not have expectations or desires, but blend your mind with whatever arises and maintain the continuity of innate awareness. Whatever happens—happiness, sorrow, sickness, misfortune, or conflict—look at it nakedly. Focus your awareness and look. Sometimes you can listen, sometimes you cannot. Maintain the continuity of innate awareness and observe, and whatever happens, the mind will go easily and comfortably. This means that whatever conceptual thoughts arise, do not try to stop them, but blend them in that way, and you will make progress. In the Great Compassion Heart Essence Sutra, it says, "Memories and thoughts self-liberate, carry them in your heart." This means that whatever thoughts you remember from the past, future, or present, the object of memory, the one who remembers, self-arising, and the increase of memory are all empty. Liberation in selflessness is the Sugata-garbha; all dharmas are the path of the mind of memory-emptiness. This is the introduction to the mind, completely explained in prose.
