Even if done, it does not eliminate craving for desire, it does not eliminate craving for hatred, it does not eliminate craving for ignorance. Those who are carried into the ocean of Dharma but are parched by afflictions will meet their death and go to bad destinies. As it says in the Sutra Requested by Od-srung (Kashyapa): 'Just as a person dies of thirst in the ocean, monks who have heard much also become full from hearing, and without abandoning afflictions, are born in bad destinies.' As it says in the Noble Tree Ornament Sutra: 'Hearing much Dharma but not putting it into practice is like a poor person counting the wealth of others, but having none of it for oneself.' It is said. In the Sutra of the Element of Fire: 'If the nature of the mind is not fully understood, enlightenment will not be attained through faith in words.' As it says in the Essence of the Moon Sutra: 'If the meaning is not understood, being skilled in terminology is of no benefit.' For example, the Venerable Lamphran and the Venerable Lhenggye Od-srung (Kashyapa) attained Arhatship by understanding the meaning of each verse of the Four Noble Truths. Kungawo (Ananda) was able to explain all the Sutras, but only attained Stream-entry. Padmasambhava said: 'Thus, one's own awareness is clear, empty, and bright. Although it has no inherent nature, it is experienced directly. If this is experienced, all are liberated. For those with sharp or dull faculties, it is like milk being the source of butter, but without churning or squeezing, butter does not arise. Although all beings inherently possess the Buddha-nature, without practice, sentient beings do not attain Buddhahood. If practiced, even a cowherd can be liberated. Even if one cannot explain, one can directly arrive at certainty. Just as one does not need others to describe the taste of brown sugar experienced in one's own mouth, if this is not understood, even a pandita is confused. Even if one knows the explanations of the nine vehicles and becomes a learned scholar, it is like a pleasant story of something far away that one has not seen. For the Buddha, a moment is neither near nor far. If this is understood, virtue and vice are liberated in their own place. If this is not understood, whatever virtue or vice is practiced, one does not transcend higher realms and lower realms, and one does not transcend samsara.' It is said. The accomplished Ugyenpa said: 'Thus, if there is no cultivation of experience on the basis of appearance and mind, even if one explains the Four Tantras with knowledge gained from hearing, one cannot guide through the bardo. Even if one has many small books of profound instructions in hand, one cannot guide through the bardo with them.'

Arrived. Tasting the flavor of brown sugar is like tasting with the eyes and mind. Just as tasting the flavor of brown sugar also requires the tongue. All profound meanings of scriptures must resonate in one's own mind. If someone suffers from famine and is troubled by hunger, merely eating tsampa is not enough, and even saying that the tsampa comes from there will not relieve the hunger. It is necessary to roast barley, grind it into flour, and make tsampa from the flour to eat. Similarly, to conquer the battlefield of samsara, one must add the essence of practice on top of any arising awareness. This is what (Yang Gonpa) said. Gyalwa Yang Gonpa said: It is not enough for the Dharma to be complete, one must become complete. Even if one pretends to be a horse in Dharma language, one sees many dog-like people in reality. It is not enough to merely understand the words of the Dharma and the understanding in the mind. If mere words and practice become old, then all dry words piled up are like the recitation of a parrot, no different from the singing of a partridge. One must put into practice everything one hears, even if it's only a little. One must apply what one knows to one's own mindstream. If the Dharma does not arise in one's own mindstream, and the tsampa water of mind and Dharma do not mix, then an insurmountable gap will arise between Dharma and people. Like treating Dharma as food in the mind, just talking about it is not enough to realize the meaning of the Dharma. Therefore, it is very important to practice diligently these principles that I have spoken about now, whether they are big or small, without abandoning them. The benefit of practicing in this way is, as stated in the Samadhiraja Sutra: Compared to placing all sentient beings of the three realms on the path of the ten virtues, having faith in the selflessness of the Dharma and taking seven steps towards the monastery is more meritorious. And as stated in the Extensive Sutra: For example, the sweetness of brown sugar, one cannot taste it by merely talking about it, one can taste the flavor by eating it. Similarly, the sound of emptiness, one cannot taste it by merely talking about it, one can taste the flavor by meditating on it. And as stated in the Sutra of Definitive Revelation of Reality: Shariputra, compared to listening for ten kalpas, merely shaking a bell for a moment and meditating on the meaning of reality, then his merit will greatly increase. Shariputra, therefore, diligently teach this samadhi of reality to others.
