also increase and do not disappear. The sutra says: "If virtuous and non-virtuous actions are not eradicated with antidotes, they will increase and, even after eons, will still arise." This shows that the results of actions are not wasted. So, since most people engage in a mixture of virtuous and non-virtuous actions, which one ripens first? Whichever is stronger ripens first. If the strength of virtue and the strength of non-virtue are equal, then whichever has the greater habitual tendency ripens first. If those are also equal, then whichever is clearer in the mind at the time of death ripens first. If those are also equal, then whichever was done first ripens first. The noble Rahula Bhadra said: "Of the fruits of actions, whichever is heavier, whichever is closer, whichever is more habitual, whichever was done earlier, from those, the fruit will arise first." This is a summary explanation of which results of actions ripen first, according to the meaning of the sutras. Furthermore, ordinary people think that doing virtuous actions brings happiness and doing non-virtuous actions brings suffering, but this seems untrue. Those who practice Dharma and do good deeds in their lives have short lives, many illnesses, poverty, and various sufferings. Those who are unvirtuous, who hunt animals, wage war, steal, and rob, seem to have happiness. So, thinking that those who do evil have happiness, it is because the fruit of virtuous deeds from a previous life has ripened in this life, and all their merit is exhausted in this life. In the future, they will go to a place without liberation, which is the action of completely exhausting virtue. This is called "wa" in this life. Doing evil in this life will bring great suffering in the future. For example, eating food mixed with poison may taste sweet and filling at first, but later it will cause suffering and even death. The Garland of Birth Stories says: "As long as evil has not ripened, the child thinks it is sweet. When evil ripens, then it becomes bitter. As long as evil has not ripened, then it seems good. When evil ripens, then one will experience suffering." Also, the Letter to a Friend says: "Even if one engages in sinful actions, they do not cut like a sword immediately, but when the time of death arrives, the sinful

It is said, "How can the fruit of karma become manifest?" Furthermore, the suffering that arises in this life from practicing Dharma and virtue is because one is experiencing in this life the result of evil deeds done in previous lives. The result of practicing virtue and Dharma in this life will be that in future lifetimes one will attain great happiness and well-being. As it is said in the Compendium Sutra: "As long as goodness has not ripened, one sees virtue as inferior. When great virtue has ripened, at that time one sees virtue as happiness." Furthermore, when some individuals single-mindedly engage in the practice of Dharma, or accumulate vast roots of virtue, they take upon themselves in this life whatever evil deeds and defilements they have from previous lives. All the great suffering of the lower realms that they would have experienced in other lifetimes is purified merely by being afflicted by illness in this life. It is said that from future lives onwards, they will attain the supreme of happiness upon happiness. As it is said in the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra: "Subhuti, those sons or daughters of good family who take up, hold, recite, understand, and diligently cultivate such a sutra as this, will be afflicted, greatly afflicted. Why is that? It is because those beings' non-virtuous deeds from previous lives, the deeds that would have caused them to be born in the lower realms, will be purified by being afflicted in this life, and they will also attain the enlightenment of a Buddha." Furthermore, in the Nirvana Sutra it is said: "Those sons or daughters of good family who desire the sacred Dharma, all the countless sinful deeds they have done will be purified merely by headaches, plagues, illnesses, pains, and the slanders of others, and they will quickly attain unsurpassed enlightenment." Therefore, when one single-mindedly practices the sacred Dharma in this life, all the karmic obscurations from previous lives will quickly ripen. Just as a great smoke arises before a fire blazes, the arising of illness and intense suffering is said to be a sign that one will quickly attain the supreme great accomplishment. Guru Rinpoche said: "When one practices the profound secret mantras, many inauspicious things such as illnesses and sufferings arise. This is like the dirt from washing a vessel."
