In the past, a wealthy man had no son, and the eldest daughter-in-law killed a pregnant woman by stabbing her with a needle. She said she did not kill her and swore a perverse oath. Later, she offered alms to a Pratyekabuddha. Seeing him fly into the sky, she developed faith and made the aspiration: May I also become like you! Therefore, because of killing the child, she was born in the lower realms and experienced immeasurable suffering. Later, in Shravasti, she was born as a very excellent woman, and after getting married and having two sons, her husband was killed by a poisonous snake. One son was carried away by water, and one was eaten by a wolf. Her husband's house caught fire, and all the parents and brothers were burned to death. Later, she lived with another man and had a son. That man got drunk and killed her son, and forced her to eat meat. She was very sad and ran away. Another man met a dead woman and left her, and that man died. According to the local custom, she was buried in the tomb with the corpse. Grave robbers dug up the tomb and took her away to be his wife. The grave robber was sentenced, and the king killed him. She was again buried in the tomb with the corpse, and the tomb was dug up by wolves, and she escaped. She met the Bhagavan and became a renunciate. Even though she attained Arhatship, a red-hot iron skewer was still inserted from the crown of her head to the soles of her feet, and she always felt severe pain. This is the residual karma of stabbing with a needle, becoming a widow many times is the result of a bad aspiration, and attaining Arhatship is the result of honoring the Pratyekabuddha, these ripened in one body separately. In the past, under the teaching of the Buddha Vipashyin, ten thousand monks attained the fruit of Arhatship. They were living in a monastery, and merchants offered a jewel. They entrusted it to the monks in charge of affairs, and later because of the hardship of life, they thought of selling it. One person said: This was given to me, not to all of you. When they said it was for everyone, he said: This is mine, you eat shit! As soon as he said that, he died and was born in the great hell. For ninety-one kalpas, he was born in filth. During the time of many past Buddhas, he was born in filth. Then, in the city of Little Lake near the Vulture Peak, everyone dumped their excrement and urine, emitting a foul odor.

In that lake, there was a large worm resembling a snake, with four limbs and a human-like mouth and eyes. Many small worms were eating it, and inside that lake, it ran up and down in excruciating pain. As it ran, it also spread an unclean stench. Even if it died for tens of thousands of years, it would be born there again. The Buddha said that it had to remain there until a thousand Buddhas had passed away. This is the story of Bhikshu Kunti. In countless eons ago, in the land of Varanasi, a man transformed all his wealth into gold and buried seven golden vases in the ground. Later, when he died, his mind was still attached to that gold, so he was reborn as a snake. He guarded the gold and lived there for many years. Even when the city became desolate and empty, he was repeatedly reborn as a snake and lived there. Later, a man came, and the snake called out to him, saying, "I have gold, Please make offerings to the Sangha. Also, invite me there on that day. If you don't do so, I will harm you." So the man took one golden vase and sold it, preparing to make offerings to the Sangha. On the day of the offering, he took a bamboo tube and invited the snake over. The Sangha preached the Dharma to the snake, and the snake offered six more golden vases. The snake was reborn as a god. The Buddha said that the snake was Shariputra, and the man was the teacher. During the time of Buddha Kashyapa, there was an elderly Arhat bhikshu with an unpleasant voice. There were two young bhikshus with pleasant voices who were singing praises. The young bhikshu said, "Your singing sounds like a dog barking." The old bhikshu said, "Do not say that, I am an Arhat." The young bhikshu regretted it and confessed. However, he was still reborn as a dog for five hundred lifetimes. Later, in Shravasti, he was born as a dog, and the merchant's sons broke his legs and threw him in an empty place. Shariputra gave him food and preached the Dharma to him. After he died, he was reborn as a Brahmin's son. He became Shariputra's novice and attained Arhatship. The above is a story about the bad consequences of sin. Regarding the benefits of good deeds: If we summarize what is said in the Damamūka Sūtra, it is this: In the past, at the end of the teachings of Buddha Kashyapa, two Brahmins observed the Uposatha vows. One made a vow to be reborn as a king, so he was reborn as a king. The other made a vow to be reborn as a god. However, that night his wife did not leave him any food and secretly ate it herself, so he was reborn as a Naga. That king's servant was a demon tree.

There was a garden keeper who found an extremely large and sweet fruit in the pond and offered it to the king's gatekeeper. The gatekeeper offered it to the queen, and the queen offered it to the king. After investigating, the king said, "The one who found this must offer more! If not, I will kill him." The man sat by the pond crying, and the dragon transformed into a human and asked what was wrong. He told the story. The dragon sent him a basin full of fruit and sent a message saying, "King, you and I are friends. You were born as a king because you kept a pure fast, and I was born as a dragon because I was impure. Give me a copy of the eight-branch fast. If you don't give it, I will definitely turn this place into a lake and make it disappear." It is said that because the Dharma was declining, the copy could not be found. The king said to the minister, "If you don't find it, I will kill you." The minister asked an old father, who said, "This pillar in the house always emits light, take a look." When the pillar was split open, the Sutra of the Twelve Interdependent Arisings and a copy of the eight precepts for one day appeared inside. The king put them in a golden box and sent them to the dragon. The dragon was very happy and offered the king many treasures. Both the dragon and the king kept the fast and encouraged others to believe in the Dharma, so they were both reborn as gods. Later, they went to see Shakyamuni Buddha, listened to the Dharma, and obtained the fruit of stream-entry. They will never fall into the lower realms, enjoy the happiness of gods and humans, and were eventually prophesied to attain Nirvana. The chapter on universally narrating the keeping of precepts, that is, the third chapter. In the past, countless eons ago, King All-Giving went to visit the garden with his entourage. Behind the garden wall, a man was singing loudly. The king was angry and arrested him and imprisoned him, preparing to kill him. The minister asked the king not to kill him, so the king did not kill him but made him a servant. Later, he became a renunciate and became a Pratyekabuddha. The minister made offerings to him and made aspirations. Therefore, in all his lives, the minister was reborn as a noble, wealthy, and long-lived god and human, a hundred or a thousand times better than others. Later, the minister was reborn as the son of a wealthy minister who had no son. His father did not allow him to become a renunciate, so he was born into a low caste.

Thinking that it would be good to be ordained, he jumped off a high cliff without getting hurt. He fell into the water but was not carried away. He ate poison but was not harmed. Because he violated the king's law, the king shot three arrows, but the arrows fell back. Then the king asked, "Are you a god or a demon?" He replied that he wanted to die. The king then allowed him to be ordained. He was ordained in the presence of Shakyamuni Buddha and attained the Arhatship. In this way, because he saved his life, that minister, wherever he was reborn, could not be prevented from living a long life, and eventually attained the Arhatship. Also, in the past, ninety-one kalpas ago, a poor man chopped wood and found two gold coins. He offered the gold coins to the Buddha Golden Stillness and the Sangha. Therefore, for ninety-one kalpas, he was born as a human being, and wherever he was born, he had gold coins in his hand. He was rich in wealth and had inexhaustible resources. Later, in Rajagriha, a son was born to a wealthy woman. He was born with fists clenched. When the two fists were opened, there were two gold coins inside. Even if they were taken away, they would continue to appear. The gold coins filled the warehouse, and the child's gold coins were not exhausted. Later, he developed faith in the Teacher, was ordained, and attained the Arhatship. He was called the Bhikshu Golden Staff. Also, in the past, in the teachings of the Buddha Golden Stillness, a poor man, because of his faith in the Sangha, swept the floor, picked flowers from the grass, scattered them, and made aspirations. Therefore, for ninety-one kalpas, wherever he was born, his appearance was upright and beautiful, and his food, drink, and beds were abundant. Later, in Shravasti, he was born as the son of a great and noble family, and his appearance was upright.
