When the knowledge merges into clear light, the external sign is that all breaths are exhaled, the act of inhaling ceases, the patient dies, and ashes appear. The internal sign is that the ultimate truth of death, the clear light, the Dharma nature like a cloudless sky, manifests for a moment. As it is said: In the Hevajra it is said: First like smoke, Second like a mirage, Third like a sky appearance, Fourth like a burning flame, Fifth like a cloudless sky, Always appearing. Thus it is said. Third, after death is: From within that clear light, In existence, the consciousness of the bardo, will arise as the union Vajra body. As the Abhidharmakosha says: Previously existing, with a flesh body in existence, Complete with all faculties, possessing unobstructedness, Possessing the power of karmic illusion, Seen by the pure divine eye of the same kind. As it is said. Like the appearance of the habitual imprints of the previous life's body, Like an image in a mirror, A clear light body that does not differentiate between appearance and emptiness, Complete with all faculties, Unobstructed in passing through hard rocks and soft water, etc., Cannot be burned by fire, Cannot be cut or severed by weapons. That is not an illusion accomplished through mantra, medicine, or samadhi, etc., but an illusion accomplished through the power of karma. Bardo beings can see each other, because they are seen by the pure divine eye, other beings cannot see them. Thus, the Dharma nature of all beings, the illusory clear light union, although naturally manifested by relying on the three times of death, those who do not possess the instructions do not recognize these, nor do they understand, and instead develop wrong thoughts and self-grasping, and again experience birth, death, and the three existences of the bardo, wandering in the six realms. This is the way of natural arising. Like this, there are three methods for transforming it into the path: preparation, main practice, and subsequent practice. Preparation is also divided into two: common and uncommon. The first is: A yogi who has mastered the instructions on the natural arising of death, etc., when signs such as mirages appear, and it is certain that death is now imminent, here

It should be understood in this way. If these things were truly real, there would be no death. It is impossible for death to be truly real. Because death now appears, one should generate the wisdom that knows all phenomena to be false, like illusions and dreams. One should abandon attachment to all internal and external things. All possessions and implements should be given away in generosity. Abandon the causes of distraction from samadhi, such as internal and external smoke and wailing, and rely on a lama and dharma friends who possess samaya, receive instructions, and rely on those who are skilled in clarification. Second, the uncommon practice is: for the Three Jewels, especially the lama and yidam, generate sincere devotion from the depths of your heart and bones. If you like elaboration, do the seven-branch offering and the elaborate rituals of taking refuge, generating bodhicitta, and so on. If you do not like elaboration, do a special refuge, thinking, "May I realize the ultimate truth of the clear light of death, attain the state of union, the great seal, in the bardo, and then act for the benefit of all sentient beings." Repeatedly generate such bodhicitta, recognize the nature of the bardo, and visualize that illusory body as the vajra body of union. Intensify the force of generating such bodhicitta. Second, the main practice is: because all phenomena are false, like illusions and dreams, there is nothing that cannot be accomplished. Things will be accomplished as you think they will, so with great confidence that is not afraid of death, if you are able, assume the vajra posture, etc. If you are not able to do that, it is said that you can also point your head to the north and face west. You can also point your head to the east and face north, and lie down in the lion posture. Visualize yourself as the yidam deity, and focus your mind on whichever method of the completion stage of the channels and energies you have certainty and clarity in, and do not let your samadhi be distracted. By meditating in this way, the internal and external signs, such as earth dissolving into water, will gradually be completed. Finally, when consciousness dissolves into clear light, the clear light of the path and the clear light that appears at the time of death are inseparable, naturally arising, and the two merge without separation, and remain in that state for a year or a month. Self-grasping
